Yesterday a friend called me saying he was going to sell his old PSX at $50 (sadly a really cheap price here:banghead and asked me to see it because the CD unit wasn't working well. When I saw it I couldn't believe it was a SCPH 1001! You know what I'm talking about, I saw these models sold on ebay at thousands of dollars and he was going to sell it at 50 bucks! Anyway, I have a couple of questions: How rare is it (not to sell it, I'm not interested on the price, he decided to keep it when he found out what did he have on his hands) and what can you do with it? Cheers
They have NEVER sold for thousands of dollars. Look on ebay, they are going for 50$. The said article said that they compared to high end audio equipment that cost thousands, not that the system itself was.

Is it april yet? Unless you have a very good amp and speakers then you won't notice much difference between a $1000 CD player, a Playstation or a $10 walmart CD player. Then again apart from a couple of audiophiles I doubt most people could tell the difference anyway. http://www.squidoo.com/Playstation-SCPH-1001/ has some good advice... I personally think the Wondermega has the best audio output of any console.
I counter with: http://cgi.ebay.com/SCPH-1001-Sony-...ryZ62054QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-Playstatio...ryZ62054QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-Playstatio...ryZ62054QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem So really, they arent that rare was what I was getting at.
THose auctions are rigged or the people are legally retarded. No smart man would pay that kind of money on old hardware unless the pope took a dump on it. A fully boxed PSX SCPH1001 with original cables, and controllers can go for $100 or more. That whole thing about the audio was because you can mod the system to where (as they say) will improve the quality of the sound (which is not very noticeable, at all) comparable to a $1000+ HiFi stereo System.
SCPH-1001 are rare? I got one for $5 at a thrift store, although the cd spindle is slightly messed up. I'd go with the retarded hypothesis.
Look through completed listings, that will show you what they have actually sold for, not what someone is trying to sell it for. There you will see that they generally sell for $50 or less, more with the box or games,
...and folks, having tested it myself and tried to convince myself that a £10 PSx is actually as good as a £600 CD player it's just not bloody true! In the same vein as those people who "claim" to sell them on eBay for vast amounts, I am convinced the majority of people who suggest they are exceptional in audio terms have cloth ears, have been duped and can't admit it to themselves or have never owned a £600 CD player in their lives to do the comparison. I'd say you can get a really nice output from it and I WAS surprised by the sound coming from the PSx, but no, no, no! It's worth what you pay for it, no more no less! If you paid £600 for it I would laugh my ass off as I have 3 you can buy if you really want them at that price! ;-)
I can't even tell the difference between a CD and a well encoded mp3. Even if the SCPH1001 was the uberest CD player ever the fact they were made with cheap parts means that it won't last you very long. On the other hand my SCPH7501 works like it's brand new.
You do realize that those who claim to get really good audio out of the PSX make several modifications to it?
Yeah and I followed those modifications as detailed on another thread ;-) Still nowhere near as good as a £600.00 CD player imho.
I have two of those. They are not rare at all. They are simply the first models released in NTSC|U/C territory. My first one, lasted for a good 8 years after the lens died (need to get it fixed). The other one i bought last year, on a flea market. Very dirt but still works great.
Ok, good to know it ^_^ Anyway, I tried it with a 3000 watt Sony player attached to the audio output and the sound's awesome! You keep rising the volume and no distortion was found (in my PSOne it was impossible to do this without losing fidelity). Not everyone can notice the difference, but with a recent ('95+) original audio CD with lots of bass, the difference is much bigger. Try it
Most recent audio cd's have so much dynamic range compression that it's a suprise they don't make your ears bleed. http://sound.westhost.com/compression.htm Maybe the scph-1001 can cope better, but if you start with a decent audio cd recording then it's much less likely too. smf
I'm not entirely surprised that you found no distortion as you are not raising the line level of the CD and claim to be using a 3k Sony (player?) amplifier (I assume). I didn't think Sony produced 3k amps? People have been complaining for years that the way audio CD's are produced these days means in actual fact there is more likelihood of them sounding harsher at higher volumes. I guess it's horses for courses and if you like it, then fine! I am not convinved in the slightest, although I think it was a surprising result none the less. No way is it equal to a £600 CD player and in no way would I suggest to anyone that paying anything more than $50 was a good deal. It's a PSx, not a Cyrus 8!
Audiophile illusions. If you want good sound at a low price get a Harman Kardon or a Cambridge Audio player. I have a 1001 and it sounds like... well, normal. I enjoyed playing with the equalizers though.
About the 3k Sony amplifier, it's a CD player bought in 2000. I've been looking for some info and I found out that (probably) the reason why SCPH-1001 has better sound quality is because if you want more and better sound, wires and contacts must be thicker, and contacts on the RCA jacks are much bigger that the ones on the "Multi Out" jacks. Anyway, the better it can sound is the same that the CD player by itself, so there's no reason to keep it attached. Cheers :020:
I just love those extreme audiophiles that sit there with their with belt-driven record players b\c it's more stable then direct driven and believe that there is a correct way to plug it in to the wall socket or else you get distortion in the sound ^_^
