I wasn't big on collecting achievements on my 360 games in the beginning, then kind of got into it. Now it's just gotten out of hand.... The Orange Box has 3 games and 2 expansion packs....1000 total points in achievements. I've beaten Half-Life 2 and Portal, and I've gotten all of the achievements for Team Fortress 2. I've played maybe 20 minutes of one of the expansion packs. What's my achievement score? 385/1000. Sorry, what did I miss again? Do I need to toggle the light switch on/off in every room 10 times to get an extra 5 points? Actually beating the games on the hardest level nowadays only seems to get you some kind of token bonus.
achievement points are a load of crap. What are we? Little kids that need a reward to finish our game? The reason to finish a game is for personal satisfaction, not some smeging points. All this on-line point crap really does make me wonder some times. Yakumo
From what I remember about the Orange Box, there are a bunch of obscure achievements, like "kill one of the guys in a particular building across the street with a grenade". Still, it's not like you can do anything with your achievement points, so what's the issue? Sometimes I'll browse the achievement listings to see if there's any fun objectives, or challenges I feel like rising to, but I don't give a shit about the points.
The thing I don't like about achivements is that I can't download save files since to "prevent cheating" all saves are locked to the profile it was created on. Really if somebody wants to boost their score by cheating LET THEM. it's not like there's a physical reward for Achivement points. It's just one big my dick is bigger than yours contest.
Tell that to the people who play nothing but WoW. That game is nothing but working for meaningless rewards not related to personal satisfaction. It's like dungeon crawling. You just chug along thru it, not necessarily for satisfaction, but maybe to see how much you can amass.
I don't play for the points but I do notice them when I finish a game. I beat Call of Duty 2 and got 1000/1000 points. If you beat all the levels you get all the points. Then I beat CoD4 and saw I only had 620/1000. Then after beating The Orange Box I had 320/1000. In terms of "achievements" it seemed that actually winning the game had fallen pretty far down on the list...heh.
Achievements are cool because they usually encourage players to do stuff they normally wouldn't do. If you don't care, you can ignore them. If you like to experiment, they can be neat. Depends on how creative the designers were. -hl718
Too true. A lot of them are just "beat the game and get 700 points". The ones that tick me off are like Prey where you can't finish it unless you get all the online achievement points, and no-one plays it online anymore. Oh well, not like I care that much.
You can not like achievements, Its a personal opinion. OBviously alot of people like them tho, including myself. Its fun to have more objectives then JUST the single player, Like most the time beating the game doesnt give you a 1000/1000 in the game. Theres always more to do.
Well by drawing a comparison between your scores and mine (as an example) it looks like you have done rather well. I've got: COD 2 = 50G COD 4 = 530G Orange Box = 525G The trouble is trying to compare achievements between games and even between 'gamers' is impossible and unrealistic. The official guidelines for Achievements are far better now, than they were in the early days, IF you like taking gaming to the 'extreme' (whatever that may be) For instance, I had already completed COD 2 on the P.C several times, before the 360 came out, so although I bought COD 2 for the 360 (as a launch title) I've never done more than checked that the game worked! So I got 50G and I'll probably never get anymore. I'm not fussed as I thoroughly enjoyed the game on the P.C. ...Like you say, you got 1000G for beating the game, that was the nature of the beast at that moment in time i.e beat the game = 1000G. There is NO humour in getting 1000 'G' on COD 2...it's straight down the line, basically 60G for finishing each level on Veteran, no if's, but's or maybe's and no chance to 'explore' the 'complexity' of the game, no chance to think, just duck, reload and shoot. Then we move on to COD4, the goal posts change, Infinity Ward want us to play the game at various skill levels and to have FUN! ...I remember choosing to shoot every T.V monitor out in one level, to get an achievement, and it was great (FUN), there's hundreds to shoot out and at the end its a challenge to complete before the level ends. Those that have done it will know what I'm warbling on about, it added depth and an extra chance to do something 'different' in a game that could, if you choose, be VERY linear. And finally Orange Box, well I got a couple of 100 more 'G' than you on that one, hehe, yet I've not played Portal 'properly' as it never appealed. ...So pro-rata I'm doing better than you? Well, not better, just probably played it longer? As you know, there's sooooo much to do on that game but its a linear as fcuk!!!!!!!! ...So to get round this, there's some real 'classic' achievements, there's one where you have to pick up a gnome at the beginning of the game, with the gravity gun and carry it all the way through until the end when you have to place it in a rocket!!!! Yep crazy as hell, and hellishly difficult as well, totally inspired if you ask me (and 'no' I haven't done it!) ...It's 'tricks' like these that are clever and takes gaming to the real gamers. It amuses me when I see peeps bash achievements, when they either don't have a 360, have a 360 but never use it, claim that they are a gamer yet don't have a 360, or don't want one as its too modern, unreliable, crap / whatever  ...It's all very well 'complaining' about achievements but they are just part of the entertainment of the game, they mean NOTHING in the real world, just like video games mean nothing in the real world, the minute you take them serious you have lost it. :banghead:
I do like my achievements, although I much prefer my trophies :110:. As people have mentioned already, it adds something a little extra to the game. Always feels satisfying getting that extremely difficult trophy/achievement and you'll always have that as a 'badge of honor' so to speak. If you don't want them you don't have to go after them, but hey, more fun for me .
I like acheivements. My score is like 5680 or what ever. I really don't care if i get em though. I just like bragging to my friends mine is higher but thats cuz i own 33 games and my friend has 6 haha.
honestly i love achievements. i just hit 30,000. i've spent a lot more time on some games than i normally would have and i'm glad i did. imho i thought the Orange Box had awesome achievements. so far the ones i've struggled with are the Portal ones (time trial/fewest steps). it was crazy carrying a gnome through almost all of an entire episode!
Achievements are made to cater to the WOW obsessive compulsive types who love grinding.. Enjoy the game! Who cares that you squished every single grub in HL2 or fell 30000 feet in portal. It does nothing to enrich the game experience. But if achievements are your thing, enjoy yourself! I'm more old school, so doing things like zelda with the wood sword, or resident evil with only the knife are more to my liking.
TF2 achievements are kind of hard to get as Alchy said. In the PC version you get unlocks with them. Most people make achievement maps just to unlock the new stuff.
Achievements sometimes add to the replay value of a game. Why else would you play on the most difficult setting vs. Normal? Now you can actually show people you did. If you have a lot of friends playing the same game you can have fun being an asshole. What pisses me off is that I got passed by everyone because I don't play sports games or Avatar.
