ASSEMbler, i'm not sure if you realized this. But things like Zelda with the Wood sword and Resident Evil with just the knife are kinda what evolved into achievements.

Yeah, that's exactly achievements are. Like in TF2, where some of the achievements call for unorthodox methods of killing enemies just to prove you can. But they have unlocks, at leas the PC version's achievements do. And so does Halo 3.

I really could care less about gamerscore and achivements. I've got 1200/1250 for Halo 3 and that's the closest I've been to completing a games achivements. COD4 is only about 640 right now, I still have to finish Act III on Veteran though. My overall GamerScore is only about 2025 or 2050, It's pretty pathetic.

it depends with me. Like, the other day i purposly pushed myself to get 2 double kills in a round on Halo 3's recent map pack to get the new achivements they released for it.

but usually it's just whatever. Like when i got 5 stickies in a round? and i got the achievement? that was just me playing. same with the overkill achievement and triple kill with the sword.

Call of Duty 2 was a @#%$ to get the full 1000. I also did it so I know. I never would have played on expert if not for the points. You didn't need the little extras to make that one a challenge. If you played that game on any other level than expert even beating the game would leave you with only a few hundred. COD3 I didn't care for and didn't play much. Now COD4 is worse than COD2 all I need at this point is to finish the prologue on expert but I dunno if that will ever happen everything else is done.

I enjoy the achievements. When my buds and I are all playing the same game at the same time we use them and talk smack. Compared to the rest of the world we all suck no doubt about it. Its all about being the one guy in the group who is heads up on the current game taking pot shots at the other suckers makes it worth it !

    Exactly!

COD2 really is tough as hell. I still didn't finish it, I jumped right into Veteran and it was hard but worth it.

Halo 3 has more achievements? Does that mean more armor unlocks?

from reading some of the comments here it sounds like quite a few of you only put effort in to a game because of the points. Shouldn't a game make you come back to it again because of it being a good game? Take Bio Hazard 4 on the Game Cube. That game was so exciting and thrilling that I instantly went through it a 2nd time straight after completing it. That's how a game should be. that good that you really want to try for that higher score or more difficult level setting, not to get points to make you look like the king of gamers.

well megaman 9 for wii is a good example. there's achievements - but no gamer score. yet i still found myself trying to meet the requirements. I don't give a rats ass about my gamerscore - but i do like achievements for sometimes thinking up wacky ass standards like "beat galaxy man in 10 seconds"

That's pretty much what I do is play good games to complete the challenges it gives you. Think of it this way, you beat RE4. Cool, cool, now you do it a second time on special agent ( I forgot the difficultys name...ack). Well, with achievements, you get some points and a little badge to let people know you did it, or just to give you an extra incentive to do it. A lot of the times achievements unlock stuff in the game as well. It works best if you have a bunch of friends playing the same games and what not. It also probably works better when your college kid aged, lol. But yeah, a lot of people will play shit just for achievements, but to me, they add replay value, there fun to do (sometimes), challenging, etc. There a great idea. Getting all the points in a game usually tells you you've acomplished everything, I guess. There fun either way.

Thats pretty much how I feel, to be honest. I don't care about my Gamerscore, and the only game I've actually tried to get 100% on was Halo 3, and that was for the armor unlocks. I gave up eventually out of boredom though. You have to beat the game like 3-4 times on several modes to get 100%. I got almost all of the MP achievements just by playing the game.

Speaking of achievements, EDF 2017 has some of the worst ones out there. So much potential. Thats another game where I tried to get all the achievements but quit out of boredom. Actually I just wanted the Genocide gun but its impossible to get on a solo run, I think.

Once or twice. If you do Heroic it unlocks the achievement for normal and easy. Legendary unlocks all of them, so really, you sjould be doing heroic first time through, and then Legendary with friends on coop. So about twice.

Achievements shouldn't make you want to play a bad game just to get some gamescore, they should be more like a badge of honor for achieving something that's very challenging in a game that you enjoy.

You don't see the irony here? They're the same thing. I think we all appreciate the draw of a challenge, I just don't care whether or not the completion of said challenge results in achievement points.

Well, to get 100% you have to play through campaign on their scoring system, too. So you might have to play through the game 3 or 4+ times.

The thing about achievements is it's quite easy to buy em. Just keep renting games and pick off all the easy ones(i.e. points for designing a custom character etc).

You can get 20,000 quite easily.

I prefer the PS3 Trophy system as you can't buy your way to Platinum and Gold Trophies, gotta work for the buggers.
