link? I suppose the hardware should still be there. I know for a while they sold
add on for the exp port, but I haven't been able to get one for my collection in years..

I think that's only for the SCPH900x series. Th e 10x series do not have such possibilities.

WHat I'm interested in, though, is the VCD add-on card that you solder onto the PSOne and fits snugly into the console.

Lik-sang used to sell them long ago.

I still have the installation kit to add the parallel port to SCPH900x series. It's a lot of work to add even though SCPH900x has the holes and etc. already there.

Can't imagine it's doable with the PSOne even with hacking/cutting/modifying PCB...

any chance you happen to have the instructions for said kit? I ordered a kit to add parallel to the psone back when lik-sang was around and ended up with the 9000 kit and no instructions.. the directions were on the web for a while.. but i'm lost as to where now that i have a spare kit, a few spare 9001's and time....

I'd imagine it's doable on the psone by some modification of the internal vcd kit installation (which i don't happen to have either)

regarding the psone, however.. looking at the schematics, the CPU appears to have 2 serial ports coming off it.. Serial 0 which is used for the controllers, and Serial 1 which is used for... apparently nothing... is this the mythical missing serial port?

(Pins 70-75 of the CPU on both board layouts specifically)

It's the same old SIO port that were present on the old Playstations. Basically, yes.

so in other words the answer to the age-old question is.. yes, we can have us a nice link port? ... i guess i might be donating one of my spare psones to science if this is really the case...

    A good start then, maybe:

    at my 4shared folder
    http://www.4shared.com/dir/8114060/f6ae20/PS2.html
you will find three service manuals for the PSOne and one for the old SCPH-7500 series Playstation. With the pinout of the processors and the schematics for both the parallel and serial ports maybe you can hook them onto your PS One.

Good luck with that project :)

Finally getting back to this, and my conclusion is that Sony's was really nice...
leaving full test points for serial on the board... ON ALL models of the PSONE
    [IMG]

It seems that R136, R135, R134 simply serve to make the PSONE either think the serial port is open or closed (betting on the latter) such that existing software still works and causes less hassle- removing them will free up the test points to be connected to.

Removing the extraneous bits from the 7500's schematic, this should do for replacing the missing hardware:

Guess I should get to work on making this...
anyone have a suggestion for a replacement psx serial port source?
I'm guessing it's a sony proprietary connector, but then again, others DID make 3rd party link cables and the like...

I suppose a good bet to get a connector is to get a junked psx and desolder one from that. I can't imagine them costing too much.

that's propably what i'd start with were i ever to try this.

Seems like an interesting project in any case, albeit a bit useless to me as i don't have a PSone and i do have a yaroze anyway :)

good luck with this, and take a ton of pics when you're done with it.

heh- I'll probably end up making a few boards for it.. revamped the list of components last night, and found a source for the link ports new actually!
While I love the look of the yaroze, it's far from a portable solution to tinker with, and the benefit of a halfway decent lcd on the psone makes it an attractive option in my opinion.
