ah yeah, yaroze isn't exactly a portable machine, albeit as you said it, it's very sexy :)

in any case, im very interested about seeing the thing once you've put it together ^_^ hacks 'n mods are one of the main reasons i love hardware to begin with :p

good thing that you found new connectors too, desoldering one from a psx wouldn't propably be the prettiest possible solution anyways.

I never got around to updating this:
As danhans115 confirmed, the testpads work fine.
I've been lazy in making a proper expansion board, but confirmed it myself today by running an 8-pin cable between the test pads of the psone serial (shown above) and the proper pads on a spare 5501 board I had handy.
If you look to the right of the area shown, there's a perfect spot to pull 3.3v digital and ground as well.

    next up- proper jack installation.

Wow this is great work, Iv'e been searching for a way to add the missing serial ports to my psones as a project. If I understand your post correctly you hardwired the serial connection form the psone to a 5501 PSX. Did you run a linked game to test it? I tought the psone was missing hardware to "invert the signal" I just need some clarification here. I am planning on adding a standard connector to each of my psones, either db9 or RJ45 and use common cables to make the link. I have several linkable games to test.
    Cheers

It is missing hardware to invert the handshaking lines. You would need to do this before fitting a link port.

Alternatively to test this out you can hardwire this on a PSX internally bypassing the hardware that inverts the signal.

I'd also like to add in this tidbit:

Be VERY careful when soldering to the SCPH-100/1/2 mobos. I'm not entirely sure what the deal is but when I attempted an overclock mod I lifted a few traces. Yes this is normal if you are inexperienced with soldering but I'm far from it. I attempted repair but made the problem worse as the top layer of the PCB isn't made from extremely solid materials. Seemed a bit flimsy to me.

Thankfully I was able to salvage the modchip and laser and drop both into a SCPH-1001 that has had a bad laser since 2001 or so. Happy me!

Are you saying we could just an ethernet port to the PSOne to play linked games running a crossover ethernet cable?

    Thanks

Yep thats the idea, cat5 technically not ethernet. There will be no IP addy or TCP stack so its just the cable were speaking of (cat5) Now in retail stores it will probaly be marked ethernet patch. It is great for allot of homebrew projects. The official PSX link cable has 7 colored wires inside plus one silver stranded cable and one copper stranded cable going thru it. There is no insulation separating the two braids so one is most likly gnd, the other sheild and I would think you could combine them. cat5 with 8 conductors will then have just enough.
I cut one in half 10 years ago, soldered a male DB25 on one end and a female DB25 on the other. Then using TWO 25ft. parallel printer cable extentions I made a 57 foot link! and It worked!:)
If you have money to burn you could buy two serial-to-ethernet adapters at $200 a pop and with the right routing setup in your router link both over the net directly. It would be easyiest to do this with a pair of PSX that have a working serial ports first. Then you need to make sure the signal is rs232. you would need a MAX232 chip for this (very popular chip):flamethrower:

You can just solder the wire directly to the leg of the chip. No need to lift the leg. Makes it a lot easier to add a switch for stock and overclock.
