Most drugs will have a detrimental effect on your health if taken at higher doses..... A big difference is that while taking large amounts of amphetamines isn't good for you (obviously), withdrawal won't kill you. You know what kind of withdrawal will kill you? Alcohol and benzodiazepines (such as X@nax [word filter?] and Klonopin), both of which are legal (the latter requiring a prescription). Adderall is generally safe as long as the user doesn't have a pre-existing heart condition or taking it past the recommended dosage. Yeah, it's very easy to get addicted to adderall if you're predisposed to that sort of thing. Chemically it's not identical to cocaine, but generally speaking you get the same effect. I'm not too worried about becoming addicted to it because I've never really cared for amphetamines in a recreational sense. @APE - I'm a little worried about wandering into old habits and just hyperfocusing on reading wikipedia instead of doing homework, but I'm just going to have to dredge up some self control and do my best to stay on track in school. And yeah, Ambien is pretty bad news once you figure out what it really does. It doesn't even put you to sleep; I'm pretty sure the furthest it will take you is stage 3, which is still a stage removed from REM sleep. I've done (and seen others do) some weird shit on Ambien, and I'm not touching it again.
same as coke? not really, although they re different by one molecule their effects differ significantly. Coke wears out quicker and traps dopamine in the brain, much more than say any amphetamine. Plus, your face doesn't go numb if you sniff amphetamines, although there's a similar bitter taste.
Good point, I didn't even think about the numbness bit. So lack of attentiveness during class and daydreaming are symptoms of smoking weed? I must've been smoking since I was six, and I never even realized it! Get real dude. I've seen two psychologists and a psychiatrist, and you don't think that at least one of them might have thought this was the case (not to mention myself)? They all know about it, and none of them think that's what the problem is. Anyway, this topic has kind of turned away from what it was originally about and any minute now the morality brigade is going to come storming in. I'm done here. If anyone still wants to continue this they can PM me.
I've had ADD forever so I've been on ritalin concerta dexdrine adderall strattera You might want to consider Strattera as its a non-stimulant drug that often works along side a stimulant. also while I'm now on adderall when it comes out in canada I'm switching to Vyvanse The reason is because adderall starts dying in the night so I can't focus at night. So I need to take Dexedrine in the afternon Vyvanse has the same chemical structure but is a mirror image of adderall a enantiomer. Due to this change it makes it last longer. It also has less reported side effects apparently. See here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisdexamfetamine
What I'm predisposed to is doing things that are better percieved as constructive. Studying for math to me is worthless as I do not have a need for math beyond Algebra but in order to finish my degree I will need Caculus and likely beyond that. I'd much rather garner information on how to make a kick ass curry as well as what pairs well with a Pinot Noir than how to derive square roots. Adderall has some noticable physcal affects for me though. I was in a Safeway at night the other night waiting for a friend to get out of the bathroom and I took a blood pressure test. It clearly showed I was hypertensive and I had just taken a 30mg XR spansule about 3 hours prior. My blood pressure is well within the range of normal (and I'm 22 without any bizzare pre-existing conditions to explain 192/90) thus I know it was the stimulant. Wouldn't have noticed had it not been for that machine and the fact I was annoyed that the night didn't go anywhere near as planned. People who lie to get a script are playing with fire and smell like gasoline. Of note though, I'm making a second attempt at losing all the weight I need to (I'm at ~208lb, 4th day into exercise/diet regimen and already saw 1lb of weight loss that got regained via water drinkage. Huzzuh either way!) and I've found Adderall really doesn't affect my apetite much. My genetics do have the tendency towards various disorders and my sister does have OCD with one of two main obsessions being food cravings. It helps me keep control of myself through a few different means rather than pure apetite suppression: A)By allowing me to focus more easily I can keep myself on tasks that otherwise would be boring as hell. B)Increased energy makes me want to go out and burn it off through yard work or something productive. C)Pure raw apetite suppression. Since I do have a bit of a tinge towards compulsive eating (not very strong mind you. I can keep it well under control when occupied it's more of a bordem thing than compulsion) I still eat enough and make myself eat. I just have to make absolutely sure I have nothing unhealthy around (nothing more processed than cheese or more sugary than strawberries) or else I will snack a bit on what can be termed "crap". Take a look at hot pockets and note they don't use real cheese rather a mix of corn starch and casein (protein found in cow's milk). Though I do have friends that will take a 10mg dose and have their apetite disappear all day long with no care in the world about eating anything. Quite dangerous if you don't want scurvey especially when combined with a decent (see:80mg+) dose of caffeine. Potentiates the hell out of the stuff.
pure coke doesn't make you numb? Tell that to dentists who used to use cocaine before Novocaine in order to numb a patient's dental area before pulling teeth. Coke is a local anaesthetic besides being a dopamine trapping drug. You need to do more coke sir. PS: this is a real ad from 1885
well strattera is a ADD medication that is non-stimulant as I said, very few side affects. Vvyanse might help you lose some weight...and again its a new medication, its adderalls brother just its mirror image but it lasts longer. Plus, less physical side effects. Its already been available in the states. strattera did a lot for me when combined with adderall ... I've been on a lot of ADD medication and adderall and strattera have been the best. http://www.strattera.com/index.jsp
I remember taking this medication for my ADHD (Its very controlled now) as a child and it turned me into a zombie, also when I got off the stuff my metabolism went ape and I gained weight which up until 4 years ago I was able to lose again. I also took Ritalin and my hands would shake and I would go to my mother for comfort as I felt like I had little control over my body and I was scared. My mother than took me off of the stuff all together and I basically rode it out. Eventually I was pretty much able to control myself as I got older and now at the age of 18 I have very little concentration issues and I have a lot of self control. I just wouldn't take that stuff it added more complications for me than it did fix anything and eventually the ADHD symptoms faded with time anyway. If you ever need to relax and concentrate I recommend something that's not over the counter and grows out of the earth (UA requirement exception). I mean that stuff is better for you and has no side effects like some of these dangerous over the counter prescriptions, plus it will help you with any concern of weight you may gain by speeding up your metabolism granted you don't give into "the munchies". If you want more energy I suggest vitamins.
I actually started taking Adderall XR a few years ago, I'm 28 now. At first I felt a little jittery, but after a few weeks you don't even really notice it. For me it just helps focus during the workday. It also acts as an appetite supressant. If I don't take my pills I feel like I'm starving. It also seems to not have any addictive qualities. I ended up going on a multi-week trip without my pills and no way to get new ones. I didn't have any headaches, pain, cravings (except for food ). I know the jury is still out on wether ADD/ADHD is actually real or whatnot, but I do know that the Adderall XR helps. As a side note, I also was on standard Adderall for a while. That stuff just made me jittery and it was hard to sleep. I don't see any of that with Adderall XR, plus, it just recently came out in generic, so it's a tad cheaper (Of course my insurance doesn't realize that so it's still cheaper for me to get the real stuff, but whatever)
That craving for food you talked about, that's what messed me up as a kid, I never turned into a fat kid but I gained a belly and for someone like me as a kid who was well in shape it kind of messed my life up for a while. I also experienced the jitters except it didn't go away after a week. The effects are different for everyone but still I wouldn't chance it. I am as reluctant to take that stuff as I am to try hard drugs (anything other the MJ and Shrooms) Just seems like a legal speed to me.
Ok, I'll start off with some stats, and leave the end open for interpretation: -20 Years old. -6ftish, maybe 6ft 1in -125-130lbs - equals out to a decently-underweight BMI of 17 -Diagnosed via sonogram to have Mitral Valve Prolapse, which means the mitral valve in my heart leaks back a little and isn't as efficient as it could be - basically I get tired doing strenuous physical tasks a lot quicker than some people -Very difficult for me to be phyiscally comfortable - I rarely calm when I'm not sitting and wedged between a chair and a desk, or my bed and a wall. I'd hate to have to sleep with in the same bed as someone, they'd probably go insane feeling me toss and turn and twitch for a solid hour. I've started sleeping without a pillow for some reason. -Incredible problems focusing at times - as stated before, mental tasks such as studying or focusing in class. Even when I force myself to get something done, like take outrageously comprehensive notes on a lecture or shut my computer completely off to do homework, I rarely retain unappealing knowledge either at all, or for more than a night a few nights. Tests/exams have been increasingly difficult to deal with over the past few years. Not that I value anyone on here's amateur medical opinions to any specific degree, but if someone can relate and recommends me seeing a psychiatrist, I certianly will. I'd do anything to be able to get through my higher mathematics courses without taking them twice, which has almost become routine. I even dropped out of programming which I used to love dearly.
There's a lot of bullshit in this thread. Don't throw your crappy guesses into a conversation just for the hell of it. If you don't know what you're talking about, shut up. Adderall isn't meth. Yeah, they share the same family tree, but so do paintball guns and AK-47s. I take Adderall. It costs me $70 bucks a month for the pills and $50 every 6 months to see the doctor to get more prescriptions. I need it, and pay a lot for it. (nearly street prices!) It completely changed my approach to school and other things. Going from a 'C' to an 'A'(++) student is pretty awesome. In addition to being a decent student, I also write music, and my musical output on adderall more or less doubles. That's pretty nifty too. Also, if Adderall or some other medication has some nasty side effects for you, it is not an excuse to leave the problem untreated. Try a different medicine, try a 100. Once you get what you need to fix something that causes you problems, it's well worth it.
Adderall and meth are similiar in chemical structure but that doesn't make them the same thing. Ephedrine is similiar to meth too, in fact its a precursor for it but it is NOT meth. You can't even smoke adderall in its prescribed form without quite a bit of work nor inject it. People do meth. When legally prescribed and monitored you're going to do fine, its the abusers who make it a problem. Alecjahn, I'd see a shrink and look into the non-stimulant based ADD meds. Sounds like you could really benefit from them and there are quite a few that won't make your heart issue any worse.
That's good to hear. I've been told my heart issue isn't really dangerous at all by my specialist, though it would ease my mind to know it's not working overtime just to keep me concentrating a little better. I'm sure it's working hard enough. On the other hand, Strattera (the only one I know of) does have increased heart rate and blood pressure as possible side effects. Whether this is superficial or not I guess is the key. And then again, I've also had a hunch that my heart could be the source of my problems. I'm going to make a solid attempt at straightening a couple other things out (me metabolism has always been extreme - see more: my weight - so I don't really eat very healthy as not doing so hasn't ever seemed to hurt... as well as trying a couple new things for sleep). I guess it will all come down to what insurance is willing to help out on.
Modafinil is supposed to be very promising as a "wakefulness-promoting agent." I don't know if anyone here has any experience with it but I've read good reports. I just went to the last of my evaluation appointments today, and he said he was "confident with giving [me] an attentional disorder diagnosis," but I don't know how that works as far as medication goes. I have one more appointment at the end of the month so I guess I'll see what happens.
I don't know if I mentioned it but I once had my blood pressure tested a few hours after taking a somewhat high dose of adderall. 192/92. That is VERY into hypertensive and not good for long term usage. Though the dose I had was somewhat high and I wouldn't do it again for that same reason. My norm is about 130/90 which is very, very good. So you have plenty to worry about when it comes to adderall raising your BP.
