AOL announced they’re shutting down AIM on Dec.15. Hard to believe it lasted that long. Have many memories of using it in the early 2000’s. Talk about an end of an era.

AIM was dead once other methods of sending unsolicited nudes came about.
I miss the days of AIM though. Met alot of interesting people. Had some epic fights.

But I REALLY miss Yahoo Messenger. that was the wild fucking west.

ICQ? Last time I tried to use that (just a few months ago) they insisted on me revealing my phone number to them to "recover" my account (after having logged in successfully), so as far as I'm concerned they might as well be dead. RIP 8-digit UIN.

Didn't AIM, MSN and ICQ kinda-sorta merge at some point? How can only one of them throw in the towel? Oh well, maybe I'm just misremembering...

IRC (at least EFnet) is alive and well, too, just been there a few weeks ago. Are there still FXP boards left - or FTP-based topsites, for that matter?

Back in the day, I could message my daughter on AIM through ICQ. Maybe AOL bought ICQ or something and then sold it off to a Russian company I think.

I still connect to my 6 digit number on ICQ on a VM. I only log on to Undernet to see if any Quake clan members have stopped by, 2 eggs sit in the channel since the 90's.

I'm surprised that AIM still exists. I think AIM and things like it became obsolete because of the fact that everyone texts each other, plus there are things like Skype, Facebook Messenger, iMessages, etc. It's surprising that AOL itself still exists. I think most people associate AOL with dial-up internet and those CDs they would spam you with.

Well the thing is twitter and Facebook pretty much intergrated messaging so AIM became a bit pointless.

They were forced to integrate AIM with other technologies when AOL and Time Warner merged iirc

Can't believe AIM has lived this long.

But I also thought Tekken died with 6, guess I don't pay attention.

I had all 3. MSN was the craziest for me but there were a lot of good memories from Yahoo! Messenger. I also met a lot of interesting people. I used MySpace chat rooms a lot too.

Old aim was so great. Plain text boxes. Functional. Then came the big conversion update where instead of having a nice set of maybe 8 text lines stacked on top of each other, in the same amount of space there's 2 chat bubbles. So annoying having to constantly scroll, unless you make the window larger, which I shouldn't have to do to text chat (working on stuff on PC, need the screen real estate) Crap piece of bloat also lagged.

I don't even know what the "go to" messenger is on PC. I guess Skype... ugh I hate skype. Every time I booted it, it would scan all my drives and I assume compile together my system information. Why? I uninstalled that virus.
