Back in the day, there was as an "Alone in the Dark" project planned for the 32X that eventually got canned, like many other games targeted for the failed add-on. However, very little information about this seems to survive on the net in these days, resulting in an ambiguous matter. The game was always listed as simply "Alone in the Dark", perhaps indicating a port of the first Alone in the Dark game, and that's what most of the info about the canned game claims to be. I remember, though, seeing a pic associated to the project in certain console magazine from those days, looking like it was Alone in the Dark 2 (not sure if it was a 32X or a mere PC pic, however), which would be pretty logical since that game was released in Sega Saturn and PlayStation afterwards. A cancelled release of AITD 2 for the 32X isn't a big worry to me, but if it was the first game instead what was going to be released on the 32X, it would have been a whole different story, since it's my favourite in the series along AITD 3 and the only console release it ever had was for the 3DO. So, was Alone in the Dark for the 32X going to be AITD 1 or AITD 2 ?
Maybe the 32X Alone in the Dark became the Saturn's Alone in the Dark 2 which must be said is the biggest pile of crap on the system. Unbelievably slow, very unresponsive controls and not a single reason why you'd want to play it. Yakumo
Yeah, i had the Playstation port of AITD2 when i was younger, it was pretty bad. Stick with the PC versions.
Indeed, Truly horrific in all ways. the music appears to be out of time with itself on the first bit which is a bit comedy and maybe a reason to turn it on haha. Or just....not.
I'm pretty certain it was to be based on AITD1. I'm getting this from articles I read in Gamefan and Gamepro. I think one mail order house called Chips and Bits even had a pic of the box art (probably a mock up) in one of their ads, and if I recall correctly that box art was definitely based on the first AITD. Personally, I was excited at the prospect of this title coming to 32X back then as I didn't have a PC or 3do capable of playing it so I had every intention of actually buying it.
Alright, found the article; "Remember our CES report where we unveiled the first pics of Interplay's rather smart-looking Alone in the Dark II for the 32X? Looked good didn't it? Well, sadly a UK release has been further postponed as Interplay don't have the rights to release it in the UK! This is a real blow, as we reckon it had all the makings of one of the best games for the plug-thru and would be the perfect showcase for it. Still, Infogrames distributed the game in the UK, so perhaps it will appear through them. Fingers crossed.' Mean Machines SEGA, May 95.
... It's a near-exact port based on the original PC code. All the loveliness of the PC version remains, as well as all the bugs. Obviously the music is digital and there's speech when books are read, but those are likely the only real differences you'd notice between the two.
OT, has anyone tried the new AitD for X360 yet?? It got horrible reviews, but looked like it could have been alright.
So it seems like it definitely was going to be Alone in the Dark 2. My memory didn't trick me when I was certain that I saw a Alone in the Dark 2 pic associated to the 32X project, it's just that everyone calls the canned project as simple as "Alone in the Dark". I would gladly have prefered that the intended Alone in the Dark game for the 32X was the first one, however. That's because it is based on the PC CD-ROM version, rather than on the original floppy one. There are no substantial differences between the PC CD version and the 3DO version. Only minor details like an alternative letter font used by the console version.
I wonder if the Saturn version of Alone in the Dark 2 is a half arsed port of the unreleased 32X game. It wouldn't surprise me. The Saturn game is sooooooo slow it's unplayable. Yakumo
I wonder if it was gonna be the DOS graphics version or the updated versions that all the other systems got?
