It's not a terrible game, it's perfect for non-gamers. It's no MGS4, obviously. I don't know why anyone who owns a DS/PSP or whatever would play it. I got the free version for iPhone, had fun for 10 minutes, and haven't touched it since. Too busy playing Link to the Past on my GB Light :-D
I once felt the personal need to hate on Angry Birds considering myself a highly above average intellectual on games and electronics, and notice that it is just a shallow Iphone/Android game that can never hold a light up to all of the greatest games I had played. I hated it because it was getting more attention than I thought it deserved. I hated it because I am not a fan of touchscreen gaming/typing. Then I admitted to myself that the game really isn't so bad. Its decent for what it is. A quick and simple concept that is easy to play on the go, and easily to pickup and stop anywhere. Comparing any of our current generation phones to any gaming console, home use or portable, it can never compare. Not yet anyways. It seems like phones are trying to make buttons obsolete. I want one with a sliding keypad and sliding controller behind it! But then screw that idea too, just get a portable. I want a Pita Vita style! :033:
As stated Angry Birds is a perfect casual game, as the difficultly level is just a tad higher then "hold your hand". I did sit with an open mind and play this game and i played about 100 different levels over 8 episodes and I think only four stages took me more then 3 goes to clear... This is why i despair as games do seem to be on the line of giving you a slight challenge with a easy reward with too many games basically holding your hand, I am sure they would wipe your bum too if they could.
Angry Birds isn't even that much fun as a pure casual game. I prefer to play solitaire or Doodle Jump in short bursts.
Angry Birds just hit 500 million downloads... http://www.destructoid.com/angry-birds-franchise-hits-500-million-downloads-215066.phtml
I'm still having a blast playing AB every day for about 15 minutes. I mean, you can't beat paying $.99 for a game that has 200+ levels in it. I have all 3 of them: the original, Rio, and Seasons.
Are you going for 3 stars? Just to get the minimum 1 star, it's easy for most levels but there are some that it's a big challenge to get the minimum. Personally, I'm going for 3 stars for all of my levels.
Yeah but Angry Birds is fun. Who cares if it's deriviative of something else? What's cool about it is it's short and simple enough that you can play it while you're waiting in line at the grocery store, bank, resutrant, etc.
Just a heads up for users of iOS 5 devices: the October issue of Edge is a free download in Newsstand and has a special on the Angry Birds success story. It's a good read. Bottom line is: they took a concept very popular among casual gamers at the time, made it as accessible as possible from a design point of view, ensured a polished level design and built upon it's initial success.
I've tried it... There's not much to it. The fact that it is on a touch screen device to me makes it even less interesting gameplay-wise than any game in this category with a different control scheme (mouse, keyboard, figures, whatever). It felt to me like a dumbed down version of Artillery ( http://macintoshgarden.org/games/artillery )...
