Annother Visit from my sony friend.

My friend that works for sony was in town again today, and gave me a few interesting tidbits:

-first, the PSP will soon be packed in with a 1 gig stick and a game.

-the psp is indeed 'under performing', and its a growing point of contention within the company. even SONY ITSELF dosnt know what to make of the thing. 'multimedia device? game machine? both?' this question is STILL up in the air.

-not hot news but something interesting none the less. did you know sony STILL has WHEREHOUSES full of PS1s? i was very surprised.

-he was recently part of a group that traveled to japan for some reason or another, and apparently the CEO of sony is a complete LUNATIC. none around him seem to like the guy.

and now, PS3 info!

-the launch date for the us is november 19th, two days AFTER the wii. (think i got the dates backwards, dont remember)

-the thing is supposed to be BEAUTIFULL, and whisper quiet. he said its one of the most amazing plastic finishes hes ever seen.

and now the meat of things:


during most of our conversation on the topic, he never would say what he thought of the machine. never even hinted at an opinion. finally, after some careful probing (and 3 shots of Jamison) he finally remarked that hes "unimpressed"(!).

what to make of this, i dont know. he wanst with the company for the ps2s launch, so im not sure if this is his personal pessimism, or that the thing is genuinely a flawed piece of hardware.

 

Well my friend's dad's friend works for Sega, and he has played on Virtua Fighter 6 on a Dreamcast 3, which is a handheld system the size of a matchbox but with a 17" widescreen.

He wouldn't tell me how much it costs or show me any evidence, but I did manage to get out of him that it's pretty boring to play.

i think he was being sarcastic due to some of the info is already known as well as your story coming across as probably fake to him. Well anyway, warehouse full of ps1, im not too shocked.

Ps1 was doing pretty well even when ps2 launched. It died very quietly and smoothly. I guess sony will evnetually dump them on ebay or sell them in some sorta crazy sale.

You know adam sandler does his films exclusively with colubmbia(who is owned by sony) so that might explain where he got those playstations from.

Anyway, if the "warehouses full of PS1's thing is true....I'd like to get my hands on one. I still want a NIB PSOne, or the PSOne/Screen Combo, for my collection.

Now speaking of inside info, I heard the Wii is 5x more powerful than PS3 and 360 COMBINED. WOW! Ninty has just be showing fakes to surprise everyone and screw up their "gameplay not graphics" marketing.

Also, I have a friend that has a friend whose father worked in Nintendo, but got fired for kicking too much ass or something, like, Iwata was like "Do not kick too much ass, it is unpleasant for us, dog" and he was like "fuck no" and the thing is he gave me a lot of exclusive Wii info such as "It will be released in november" and "It's going to cost 250" and "Nintendo will have Zelda on launch window" and I guess "The Wii chipset is actually a Gamecube motherboard wich we left in the dryer too long and now it's shrunk and fits the case"

 

Call me weird, but i have an ich this last few days to mess around with the Ps3 at low level just for number-pushing. I hope the linux they ll pack-in offers at least an interface and some debug mode (yeah, as if :/ )

 

you know for some reason they really havent been talking about the linux function lately, could they have possibly axed it at the last minute?

 

I'm sure it will be locked down/crippled. But I can't see why it would be cut given IBM releasing servers running cell(on linux?)

 

IBM would never use that chip for more than a special machine so sony say that it is in a server class machine.
