    Thanks :)

I think shipping was $12 and I had no problems with customs, but that was most likely because the "letter" wasn't inspected by customs. The device is not illegal to import here, but if the letter had been inspected I probably would've had to pay tax of the $212, even if the customs slip was marked gift.

No that still isn't fair, if the ED64 is offered at a cheaper cost for people competent enough to solder the CIC and dremel the shell itself then that is a selling point for the product and worth mentioning when you are making a price comparison

If you are interested in classic gaming, then I am sure the cost is the least of your concerns! In my case I am planing to get one of these as soon as they become available...

Marsh: Although I did add my email to your mailing list weeks ago, but I didn't get a single email other than the confirmation email. You can at least send us screens and some info...

    Thnx

I think him not mentioning the other inadequacies of the ED64 more than make up for the fact that he didn't mention the price minus extras.

People competent enough for DIY stuff are also competent enough to find the price of two products and make their mind themself...

so he should write a review with implied bias because other people should go do their own homework on the products?

anyone gonna make a reply to my comments that isn't promoting biased reviews?

His review is anything but biased given how he didn't talk about the shortcomings of the main competitor (the ED64).

Excuse me, but this is a review of the 64drive, not a comparison of the two (ED64 and 64drive)... yeah so I compare the prices, but that also includes the Neo Myth 64

I think nesworld's price comparison is quite fair - although some people can cut a slot in a game case, the majority of people cant solder at all, and since this is the first Everdrive that will require some soldering if buying the bare board I think its safe to assume that most people will want to buy a 'complete' product, so the price quoted is what it would cost the average user for a 'ready to go' cart

Another thing worth noting is that the Everdrive 64 requires an Altera USB Blaster in order to update the FPGA firmware (Likely going to be a necessity if FlashRAM support is added with a firmware update) whereas the 64drive can be fully updated over USB. For a true 'like for like' price with the 64drive he could have listed an even higher Everdrive 64 price including the cost of a USB Blaster.

Note that i'm not trying to put down either cart - if I can save up enough I would really like to get both! (I just hope there will be a group buy at some point)

I can cut a hole in a plastic case and even solder that CIC to the PCB, but I still went for a complete product as I couldn't be "arsed" to do it myself.

... yeah expect an Everdrive64 review soon :)

    +1

I put down my e-mail address a few months ago, but haven't received any progress information yet. That's odd, why ask people to 'register' but don't do anything with it?

Nice review. I see that both carts require you to hit reset to "complete" the on board (aka on card) save. Currently the 64drive supports FlashRam saving games, Everdrive64 does not. Obviously the menu on the 64drive is far superior, which I feel counts for a lot. I find Krikzz's giant block font menus to be very much a pain when trying to find a game (one of the few complaints I have about his stuff). In terms of the look, I really hope Marshall considers a nicer label, that thing is bland. StoneAgeGamer's ED64 labeling is looking really nice, as he prepares for sale.

In terms of price, Krikzz is currently out of stock, but his pricing was $99 plus CIC install $15 plus $15 for the shell (no label). So that's 129. In terms of firmware updating, what is clear is that most all of Krikzz's carts don't need much updating on firmware once they come out. Anyway, that aside, you probably save $60 or so with say StoneAge's full product (just guessing on his price). If we were comparing the Super Everdrive deluxe from SAG, and Super PowerPak, it's only a $15 difference. This is 4 times that. I don't really know what reason Marshall has for the $200 price, but I feel it's too high. I am not going to compare it to NeoMyth, because all their stuff is way overprice and under performing. Maybe $200 justifies his labor, but it's simply, on average, 75% more money than nearly all the other well known (no-NeoMyth) flash carts out there (RetroUSB, AtariMax, Harmony, Everdrive, etc.).

You're forgetting that the 64drive has a USB port, so if you have to compare the two, the ED64 should have a USB port too, so add another $15 to your price :)
