Besides it's looking to me like PAL Banjo Tooie is overpriced to where saving up toward an NTSC console might make more sense than spending that much for one game.

    Thanks for the clarification.

Yeah PAL version of Tooie is RARE

Yeah, I'm sure you can google a list of the games that use the chip, it's fairly common in a lot of the titles released near the end of the N64's life cycle, but only JFG and BT utilized any protection the chip offers.

Thanks again, PAL JFG is fairly cheap but I decided to get an RGB modded US N64 from APE so in the end I might just end up installing a 6105 CIC

Has anyone heard from marshallh lately? I sent him three emails over the past month about a problem I've had with my 64drive since the last firmware update but I haven't had a reply at all. My 64drive just displays a black screen instead of the menu since I updated it with firmware 1.05. I don't believe it's bricked, because all the other functions still work (flashing bootloader/firmware, error message comes up when turned on with no memory card, can connect to it via usb, etc). Tested multiple memory cards and in different N64s too.

I figure if my email is getting caught by his spam filter, at least he will see my post here. If anyone has any ideas, let me know.

In the end I decided to install a 7105 CIC into my 64drive. Took me hours to desolder the one that came with the cart.
Soldered the new one in there and all I get now is black screen.
I was very upset, spent another few hours to put the old one back. It worked fine.
So I thought maybe the 7105 from a donor Jet Force Gemini cart was faulty or i killed it somehow.
Decided to get another one and just soldered that one in, same thing black screen.
I wasted so much time and money, and I don't think the 64 drive will survive another desoldering job :(

Is there anything I can do to get the 7105 working, what could've gone wrong?
Have any of you had success in swapping the CIC?

Pretty sure. I've got a spare 7105 if anyone wants one.

Did you bridged the small jumper at the back of the board as stated within the manual/faq, because thats what you have to do to get it working. I switched my CIC as well and bridged that jumper. No problem here.

Thanks for your replies. Rocco it's working now, thank you so much :)

The FAQ is misleading unless there's something I can't see. Says refer to the manual, there's nothing in the manual about it.
It would be nice to have it included there :)

Basically I wasted a Jet Force Gemini cart for nothing, but I'm not complaining. Hopefully no one else will make the same mistake and almost destroy their 64drive :/

@Pikmin - did you use an IC socket for the new CIC. So much easier to swap chips then, without fear of damaging the board.
I think the CIC only runs at 1.6MHz, so a standard socket shouldn't cause any problems?

You could also piggy-back the 7105 chip onto the existing one, then add a switch, like in @sonicdude's guide...

I reckon you'd only need a two-pole switch, so you can select between the DATA_OUT + /COLD_RESET pins on either chip.

I wouldn't expect it to matter if both chips are kept powered 'cos DATA_OUT + /COLD_RESET are the only outputs AFAIK.
(the deselected chip will still receive a DATA_IN signal, but I don't think it can hurt anything).

    Just a thought. :friendly_wink:

Thanks for the recommendation OzOnE :) I don't know anything about electronics :/

If I ever decide to get another 64drive I might go that simpler path with a socket. One thing is for sure- will get the drive without the CIC.

People out there who are planning to install x105 might find the guide to be useful

derekb: I already own Tooie, wanted all in one :)

Think you could give us a hint as to what's planned for future updates for the 64drive?

    Psst, implement cheat support :p

Yeah, sadly, the latest ED64 update brought a lot of features us 64drive users have been wanting for awhile, lol; namely "gameshark support," among other various features. I do appreciate the latest update for the 64drive though, I'm glad marshall is polishing it up and fixing various bugs, I just wish there'd be some updates with some pretty epic features because as it stands now, the ED64 v2 is "better" as far as features are concerned.

    Edit: Anyone working on an alternative menu for the 64drive with stuff such as cheat support? I've messed around with it some, I just haven't had the time or patience to be at the computer all that long lately, medical issues need to be taken care of before I can sit at this computer chair for long without going insane because it's uncomfortable and causes the pain I'm already in to flare up ; _ ;

He's currently working on a "complete rewrite from the ground up" of the firmware.

The trick with cheat support is a magic bullet. As an example, the Watch catch used by the everdrive will lock if the write to 80000180 happens to occur in a branch delay slot (like using a copy loop), or if somebody were to activate a Watch again at all. Also, it would be better if its code was placed lower (like 80000120+ or 800000A0+), as this prevents conflict with games that use 800001A0 and onwards.

Incidentally, in trying to add a general trainer, I've realized that although the N64 has no problem reading and writing to ROM during an exception for some obscure reason it can't execute code directly from ROM within an exception. Normally this is perfectly legal, and it would have opened up a lot of possibilities.
