Fox News Channel 11 (Los Angeles affiliate) made a report last night on a certain group of anonymous board sites. (The *Chan "series," basically.) Supposedly, the purpose of these boards are to threaten and hurt people, according to the video.

http://tinyurl.com/38ohku (Youtube link, via TinyURL so as to prevent YouTube from listing Assemblergames.com under 'linked sites' for this video.)

Since I regularly visit said boards, I know for a fact that everyone bullshits like crazy. Nothing should be taken seriously, either read or typed. Then again, most people wouldn't know this right away, which I can totally understand. Now, seeing how the news networks tend to sensationalize the events that certain posters on those boards have acted in, I can't help but laugh at the way everything is portrayed.

I don't condone the actions of people who hack MySpaces or send death threats. Those are taking "messing around" too far. It sucks that people have done these things, but then again, this is the Internet and some people are bound to get carried away... :shrug:My purpose is to defend the boards themselves, but not certain people who ruin it for others. "No rules at all," the only "rule" for that particular part of the board, is great so long as everyone agrees to not take things seriously, but it falls apart once people: overstep certain implied boundaries (invading MySpace accounts, leaving phone death threats) or when others unknowledgeable of the site do not explore it totally (as is the case with Fox). Again, I can't really fault Fox for the latter..

This is a grey area for me. I don't condone people going all out and destroying myspace accounts and posting home addresses and so on, though.

On the other hand, I usually post on just the Video games sections of most of those sites.

Its pretty scary how far some people would go with some of the shit they do and the sheer amount of people who post on those boards, but like 1080Peter said, its almost all trolling, retards, or attention whores on most of the sections. Its sometimes good for fast discussion and like an organized chatroom with images and SOME degree of maturity. By that, I mean people don't talk in 1337 unless they're trolling or acting stupid on purpose.

Anyways, I highly, highly doubt anyone will act on what they do / post.

    Oh, also:

You CAN have a name on those sites. Fox News should do more research.

Well, thats what happens when ugly people post their pictures on the Internet.

I find parts of it funny, but I'd seriously hate it happening to me.

    EDIT:

Oh, and I thought this "woman" was a very ugly man for the longest time.

Hmm, after going through a few sites on this issue, it turns out that some crybaby got mad at a lot of the chan sites and had some grandiose plan to shut them down permanently, so he ratted them out to FOX.

As some of them say, thats just pissing into an ocean of piss.

Here is his picture, btw: (He's the blurred guy in the video):

Yeah, I normally browse the videogame board considering the random board is too "unpredictable." Once, someone was asking what he would need to set up an arcade establishment (as he had access to investors) and the topic had to go on for FIVE THREADS. I even linked to this site hoping that useful information would come their way/they could ask one of you guys about what types of games are needed in an arcade. (Plus, the community here isn't cocky when it comes to dispensing info like that.)

But yeah, I recall watching the news nonstop around 6-8 years ago and THEY SENSATIONALIZED EVERYTHING. Sickens me in retrospect.. Fox was the worst offender.

    Uh oh.

I highly suggest you edit your post, some people LIVE for raiding forums that break the rules of the Internet.

Also, you're partly wrong. There are two other chan sites involved. Though everyone visits all those sites, including SA and Ebaums, so its like one massive group.

Most people know who it is, especially from that report, you can tell by the image boards.

Snacks said himself the first two rules are for newbies only and in reality only apply to raids (which he thinks are stupid, but Hal Turner begs to differ ;D). The random section of the site HAS no rules except for stuff like CP.

Ok what the hell is going on here. Is all this true about hacking myspace and threating people? I've tried to find out more but I'm not finding much on google.

    Oh. My. Lord.

This has made my lurker status go poof, but it needed to go anyways.

I'm an Anonymous myself. Seen a few raids. Go on the boards... The usual. Never heard anything like this. Sure, there are threats and stuff... But come on. They're pretty much empty threats. I believe it's just fabricated story to get rid of all of these so called "Domestic Terrorists" and "Hackers on Steroids" off the internet, before they decide to blow the blargosphere up.

Also, we all know the internet is a serious place.

    No kidding!

It is true about people hacking MySpaces, but you must understand that that action is not condoned or endorsed as the true intent of the site to begin with. Some people take the "we are Anonymous" motto too seriously and go off and do things like that described. Yes, some Anonymii do threaten people and leave messages on their phone machines as well.

Hell, one girl posted pictures of herself screwing her dog.

Her MySpace was hacked and the offending pictures were plastered all over it. "Anonymous" acquired her phone number and called up her parents and even sent them photos of what her daughter had done. While I think this was cruel and all, it does bring up a point: be careful of what you post on the Chans as it could come back and bite you on the ass.

I also talked to this one guy who had semi-nudes of his Internet girlfriend posted on MySpace by his friends who hacked into his e-mail/MS accounts and posted the passwords and offending pics on the random board. His friends were upset and his girlfriend left him. Sad stuff - the guys who revealed his info were actually his friends.. Assholes.

    ..

The thing about the stadium bomb threat was that it was not coordinated by the site as a whole, but rather, it was just some random person BSing (well, purportedly). The site doesn't have "raiding, hacking, threatening" in any mission statement; it's only some of the regulars there that partake in those activities.

Guys, it's over. G4 officially became even more hated by me than ever.

    http://tinyurl.com/2cjskl

It's not the fact that the network is breaking the nonexistent rules, it's just that it's trying so hard to be EDGY. "HEY GUYS, LOOK AT US. WE'RE IN ON ALL THE COOL INTERNET JOKES AND MEMES." Well, this decision may have to do with a forum raiding by 'eBaumsoworld' last week, so AOTS is trying to stab back at the site by breaking the "rules," knowing full well that an influx of newbies will catch wind of the site and proceed to ruin it more and more.

"HEY, LET'S CREATE A NETWORK LIKE TECHTV BUT MARKETED TOWARD AN MTV DEMOGRAPHIC."*
The first sign of failure: "...marketed toward an MTV demographic."

Thanks a lot fuckers. You took away the greatest channel ever. TechTV may not have been perfect, namely lots of reruns, but it had a PURPOSE. It had MORE PURPOSE than a mens' entertainment (I use that term loosely) channel could ever EVER have.

The purpose of this post: G4 was never good.
