This prototype of PlayStation 3 controller was a part of one of the early PlayStation 3 Development Systems. There are two mini-USB ports. The second is hidden under the tape.

Wow thats interesting! Looks weird with the top half of the controller higher on the 'R' Buttons.

My guess is for a wired connection.

That or reprogramming, since it is such an early controller.

There was another working variant but it's too hard to get one. IIRC, it has an optical input instead mini-USB.

Got one of these + a few other early SIXAXIS controllers on my shelf, iirc, one of the 2.XX firmwares for the PS3 removed support for them :(

Never used the second port for anything myself (so that's what's beneath that tape?), but I guess reprogramming sounds likely. Main port was at least used like the port on a regular controller.

interesting with the two USB ports!
Is it just me, or does it even look a bit smaller than the final controller? I can be wrong for sure.

Wouldn't be smaller, infact a little taller on the main body. Perhaps the lack of triggers confused you XD

Yeah. Controller grip itself is the same as a regular one. But the box on the controller makes it a little larger, along with the PS1/PS2-era "frame" around the L2/R2 buttons (as opposed to the "triggers" on the final SIXAXIS design)

I would of preferred them to have kept the PS2 style shoulder buttons, i never liked the Sixaxis/Dualshock 3's triggers
