apparently it's slower in some respects compared to the fat model, according to kotaku - with the exception of Arkham Asylum which seems to load faster on their comparison tests.
I'm not sure it's *possible* forthe damn thing to get slower at loading games...oy, talk about a laggy UI. -hl718
I'm guessing UI interaction. The PS3 is the slowest of all the consoles when it comes to loading software and quitting software. You can also get lag just flipping through the XMB. -hl718
Is it that slow? Put disc in drive, make sure that load disc automatically is set and it loads, doesn't seem to be any slower then any other console unless you're sitting there with a stop watch and being anal. Quitting game? Hold down the PS button and select QUIT GAME... You can even speed it up by pressing eject when your waiting and replacing the game before the XMB comes up. Most of these guys that are anal with timings are probably crap in bed
So kotaku was talking about loading time, not the actual speed of the game? Can anyone show me the original article?
From what i read, Framerates are equal. UI-Interactions / Game Start / Blu Ray Start are different. Some is faster some is slower.
Just got one today, here's a super fast preview: It looks better than the photo's, I know it's not hard, but really, it doesn't look that bad in the flesh. It is small, smaller than the PS2 Phat it is currently sat on under my TV. I don't like the startup music. Before you had some people tuning a violin, now it sounds like someone trying to tune an oboe with a leg of lamb. It still comes with a fucking composite lead. I thought we got rid of that shit 10 years ago? whats the point of selling something that has it's main appeal as playing Blu-Ray movies come with a lead nobody has wanted for 15 years? It's pretty much the same as the PS3 Phat. I think it sounds a little noisier, but still barely audible. Might be the fact the new one is on a different shelf of my AV unit than the last one though. Can't be arsed to move it and check. If you don't have one, and aren't a raving Linux fanboy that has to install it on every electrical appliance in your house, buy one. If you already have a PS3, there's not a lot to look up to other than it using up to 50% less electricity (compared to the launch PS3's) But then again if you had a launch PS3 with PS2 BC then email me and I will swap this one for yours, so I can get rid of the bloody PS2!
Nope. Linux does not bring dollars to Sony. Allowing Linux while still keeping it segregated from the hardware requires a custom hypervisor for every hardware revision. Sony didn't want to bother updating the hypervisor for the Slim for Linux. Net result, the Slim has the hardware to run Linux, but the system won't allow it (and thus you won't get a menu option for OtherOS). -hl718
PS3 Linux wasn't even very good, it wasn't able to use all the PS3's resources so is slow for things like media work. I wanted it originally to install something like XBOX Media Centre and have it play all my MKV's and OGM's in HD. It can't, so short of using it as a basic word processor it's pretty useless.
It does get warm, but nothing like a 360 sort of temp. Certainly feels cooler than the PS3 Phat but not given it a serious bashing with something complicated. Been mostly re-downloading all my PSN games and catching up with my Anime/Dorama's. *edit* Forgot to say, ignore the noise thing I mentioned earlier, turns out it was my PVR doing something weird at the same time, it's practically silent like the old one.
