I am asking mostly because I am this way. I am a retro gamer. I have always felt a majority of the games released during the PS3/Wii/360 gen were pretty bland, generic or awful games with reused concepts every time (IE: Resident Evil, Spyro, Crash).

I rarely ever play modern games anymore and the games you see me ever playing is from before 2006.
Is anyone else here like that?

I'm not exclusively a retro gamer, but I'd say the majority of the games I play are retro. There were a few games of the PS3/360/Wii generation that I liked, but it didn't really compare with any of the previous generations for me. I play new PC releases occasionally, but there hasn't been much recently that interests me. I'm kinda sorta maybe considering getting Titanfall, but I just can't get excited about it. I hear people saying "OMFG it's the greatest thing ever!" But I don't believe it. They say that about all the new shitty games that come out. I'm still waiting for a game that both really pushes my PC's graphical capabilities and is also really fun.

I play a lot of Gamecube and Dreamcast games; I don't know if those technically count as retro, though I guess at this point they effectively are. Other than that, I play pretty much everything from Gamecube back to the Mega Drive. I've been wanting to get into PC Engine stuff, but I need to save up some money. I'm not particularly interested in the NES; there are a few games I like, but 16-bit is basically the beginning of gaming for me.

I play a lot of retro but a lot of modern too. Just depends on my mood - I'm not going to bias myself to what is an arbitrary definition of a video game. Just like I don't align myself to a specific console either (playstation vs xbox, etc). I just like video games.

Most of my games I own are retro. But I do play "modern" games on the 360 and sometimes on the PS3. So far I haven't had any interest in the PS4/XBO. I mainly just play multiplayer online games on the 360. There is plenty of fun to be had on 360 and PS3 despite them not being retro. It's just like even the retro systems, there is alot of shovelware/junk that hides the gems.

If I like a game then I will play it regardless on what platform or how old/new it is

I play a lot of retro but also a lot of modern. It's neither one or the other for me. If I like it, I'll play it. My son is the same. Modern or Retro, it doesn't bother him.

I haven't touched my 360 or Wii for about a year, don't even own a PS3 (or anything newer). It's not that they don't have any good games (though I do feel there's less than on earlier systems), but I have this huge backlog of 16- and 32-bit titles I still intend to play, giving me a bit of a bad conscience... I've pretty much decided to drop out of 'modern' gaming for those reasons.

I play both, but I started playing more retro than modern last generation. The last time I tried playing every modern game I could get my hands on was during the DC/PS2/XBOX/GC era.

I'm exactly the same way too, as i both play retro & modern though i put most of my gaming on Retro alot more than modern but don't get me wrong as there are a ton load of great downloadable PSN & XBLA titles worthy of the payment like "Lone Survivor" on PS3 via PSN and also "Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operations" just to name a few on the top of my head that are for the modern system & very fun!

It goes in cycles for me.
Lately I've been on a retro kick. But then, I'll go heavy into the newer stuff (mostly Xbox and Nintendo offerings) when there's a string of great new titles released.

I play whatever. Doesn't really matter if it's old or new.

    I'm a gamer.

I enjoy retro games mostly. Having emulators on my systems is generally a must. But that being said, I'm a PC gamer also, so I like my PC games. Console games I don't care for as much anymore, but I do own a Wii. Which besides Pokemon or the occasional Mario Kart against a friend (but that is going away soon), I play emulators on it.

Mame, Nes, SNes, all Sega systems. Must have emulators for. Various 8bit & 16 bit computers? Oh heck ya. Dosbox? word.

Oops, I missed great systems like the TurboGraphix 16. My bad, one of my favorites.

I do have a 360, but it has a non working jtag on it, that I haven't bothered to fix in 2 years. Probably won't. Shows how much I care about the system.

Anyways, I don't consider Wii's, Xbox 360 & PS3's to be retro, as far as I'm concerned, you can count anything before it as "retro".

I count PS2, Xbox, Gamecube and GBA as the cut off. Imo, that is the last generation that I actually enjoyed gaming. Everything after was always generic stuff. Mostly nothing new and any franchise in its prime during the PS1/PS2 eras are now garbage in its PS3/PS4 eras. Examples of that are Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Spyro and SimCity.
That is the biggest reason you will never see a modern console in my house. Its not that I cannot afford them (I can't), its just that I prefer classic stuff, and gaming during 2001-2005 was probably the best for me. Many good games released during those 4 years.

Retro is a nice mainstay, but at the same time every new generation of consoles has been polarizing for years. Many gamers were lost in the jump to 3D only to be found many years later with Gameboy Advances. I was cynical about gaming in the post-DC era and started going exclusively retro, but eventually I came by enough fantastic Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube games to have my sentiments be proven completely wrong.. Now people are calling that era retro.

The last gen (PS3/X360/Wii) caught me by surprise too. There are games like Mushihimesama Futari, Fez, Pac-Man CE DX (and Galaga DX), not to mention the wealth of the odd titles that come out of the indie game scene. This doesn't even consider the portable world.. Real games still exist, they just hide behind the multi-billion dollar types.

I find myself playing mostly retro games/remakes, especially multiplayer games, wherein the friends and I stick to the likes of the N64 and GCN Mario Parties, Smash Bros, Mario Karts, etc. The only really "modern" game I do multiplayer with friends on is Super Smash Bros Brawl, but only because of the "Project: M" hack (though if given the choice, Melee takes a bit more precedence for me).

I have enjoyed a decent amount of modern games, albeit mostly from the Nintendo camp and almost entirely on 3DS, but on the whole modern games don't have that appeal that makes me come back to them the way many older games do. However, maybe that's just cuz I'll need to give contemporary games more time to pass first for that same effect to happen.

In the end, I'm not automatically gonna shun a game solely because it's new, but at the same time what I do tend to see in modern games will often put me off moreso than draw me in (indie games are guilty of this too).

Almost all retro for me. I'm not a great fan of the 3d games, no idea why. It's great for driving games and Halo I suppose but I love old school platformers and fighters. Maybe I'm too old to change my style!

I play both, depends on my mood. Right now all i care about is Dark Souls II, so thats been getting 90% of my gaming time. The other 10% is split between retro games and Street fighter IV AE

Used to, but TBH you can only play 20 year old games for so long until you know where every enemy is going to come out

It's on and off. If you exclude handhelds, then the way things work for me is:
First 2-3 years of a Microsoft console: Don't play much retro (these past two generations MS has been creative and delightful for the first two years or so, then they go to shit).
3+ years into a MS console: MS console collects dust and I only play my Dreamcast and Saturn (and Nintendo handheld). Maybe the Nintendo console gets dusted off when they release a game twice a year.

    Rinse and repeat.

I haven't remained consistent with a "current" console since the Dreamcast really. I think the main problem is that most modern games are either FPS or sandbox style games, and I get burned out on both genres very quickly. Though now indie gaming is getting big, but I've never cared for that stuff outside of Pixel's work.
