But there are hundreds of good retro games to play. It's really unlikely you know them all that well. But I agree, there is no reason to limit yourself to games you consider retro.
I usually play Nintendo 64, PS1 and NES games, but sometimes I play some PC games (gotta love Goat Simulator, it was worth the money)...
i play pretty much all generations but i am partial to the very early consoles from mid 70s - mid 80s.
Well I don't like all game genres, some I didn't even bother to play more than 5min 20 years ago and neither do now.
I guess it depends how old a console is to be retro. Due to budgetary concerns, I don't have any current gen stuff - no X-bone, PS4 or WiiU. My house has a PS3 and 360 set up in the main living area, so they tend to get a lot of use. My entire PS1 and Xbox collections are in the room, but I don't often use them, for some reason. And I know I have GOOD titles. My bedroom has my GC, MD, SNES and NES in it. The SNES is hooked up, nothing else is, due to space problems. I play it on a seldom occasion because I usually only go to my room for one of three things, which retro gaming is not. However, I do try to play when I can. Life just... gets ahead of us sometimes. Also my NES is toast. I dunno if it needs a proper deep clean or if the connector's bust yet.
Well that certainly limits the number of games if you don't like alot of genres. But I also don't know just how much of the games that are what you like that you've played already. Maybe you have already played all the good ones. I used to think that a long time ago, but then I'd discover games I never knew about or games I never tried that were quite enjoyable. But it would suck if we never got another good new game again, eventually you'd be bound to have a harder time finding a good game to play.
I guess most people would contend that for consoles, where retro ends would be after GCN/XB/PS2/etc, and for handhelds it'd be the GBA (the PSP might be pushing it).
See, you say retro ends as ps2, but I remember when ps1 was not considered retro either. It's one of those great things that keeps shifting and is partof the reason I don't categorise my games as retro or not. They're all going to be retro one day. Really, they're all just games.
In my mind the Dreamcast is the cut-off point. Gaming just seemed to change after that... (and not for the better).
I mostly play retro-games, but I do love some modern generation games, such as Bioshock 1 and especially 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum/City, Singularity, GTA V, etc. That said, the past couple of years have been pretty bad if you ask me, with disappointments liks Bioshock Infinite, Crysis 3 (1 was great, 2 was not so impressive but more enjoyable, 3 is boring), FEAR 3 (I quite liked 1 and 2), Dead Space 3 (1 and 2 were great), GTA IV (hated it, I really like GTA IV, but my favourite GTA is still San Andreas) etc. But I spend more time on my N64, original XBox, PS2, and Gamecube than my XBox 360 or PS3 overall.
I'm going to go all out and say that you can play both current and retro at the same time nowadays. For example, if you've been through the 2D Metroids and Castlevanias, then Insainly Twisted Shadow Planet on 360 (Arcade) is a logical next step. There are plenty of retro styled and themed NEW games to keep you going, some use only retro elements, others take modern gaming elements and apply them to the retro theme with great effect. Hotline Miami, 3D Dot Game Heroes, the 3D Outrun titles, modern Mario games all have that retro charm, but are new. Getting back to the original question though, I play some retro, but mainly modern games. I play things that are a little off the beaten track, not just the generic sport titles, but sticking with retro only would mean I would miss new concepts in gaming, things like Heavy Rain, Alan Wake, Flower and of course extra levels for the old favourite Mario games, since Nintendo release pretty much an annual update nowadays
I only play retro these days, specifically old arcade stuff and 8/16bit console. Gaming started to loose its magic for me when the PS1 came out and everything went 3D. I enjoyed a few games on the DC, mainly the 2D shooters but the Xbox/360/PS2/3 didn't really do much for me outside a few choice 2D shooters and Super SF2 Turbo for vs matches online. I think the main reason is the size and difficulty of modern games, not forgetting the obsession with making them an interactive movie :/ An average AAA game these days takes 10+ hours to complete that usually consists of awkwardly jogging around a 3D world for hours with endless badly acted cutscenes with almost zero consequence for dying. When did regenerating energy and a save-points every 10mins become the norm? All this coupled with a full time job, I don't now people have the time to play them. My personal golden-age of videogames is 86-95. This era hits the sweet spot for me between arcade and console game design. Old 2D/sprite games have a certain magic about them for me, it could just be nostalgia but personally I think it's more than that. 2D Games seem to have a certain personality with their graphic styles and their unique control mechanics. Another MAJOR plus point for me is the length of the games. For wxample most arcade games and arcade style 8/16-bit games could be completed from beginning to end in under an hour, and lot of arcade games from my gold-age were more around the 20-30min mark. This is totally the sweet spot for me, tough punishing games that can take months of practice to learn that require tight execution and well planned strategies to finally get THAT run when you get the 1-Credit clear. It's something I don't feel in modern games. Which is the main focus of my YouTube channel. Old arcade 1-Credit runs. I don't think I'll ever get tired of this stuff https://www.youtube.com/user/exmosquito
Almost exclusively retro games since about 1998, around that time I just didn't like the way new games were going. However the exception to that is since the Wii came out I also play the new Mario games, as they tend to be brilliant.
There are about 4 PS2 games I play regularly and other than that and my Dreamcast, all my systems are PS1-era or older. Couldn't care less about FPSs and that's all that ever seems to come out these days to keep the CoD crowd happy.
There are other games besides FPS ones. How about 3D Dot Game Heroes on PS3? This isn't the best video to sample it but it's better than nothing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xa3vaFpuXmk The newest Mortal Kombat, plainly titled Mortal Kombat, was excellent. Assassin's Creed is another good one. Raiden IV, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Devil May Cry 4, Castlevania Lords of Shadow. None are FPS. It's easy to dismiss but you are missing out if you don't take the time to look for these titles. Yes, the newest Call of Duty or Halo game is going to get alot of attention, but that doesn't mean that's all there is.
Oh yes loved Lords of Shadow, Assassin's Creed (still need to finish #2). I think beyond FPSs, I've grown tired of online play: a. because I'm shit at it; b. some peeps online are extremely rude; c. online play modes are generally quite repetitive; d. DLCs, DLCs more DLCs... Mostly importantly, I prefer story driven games on any generation. So I couldn't really buy something like TitanFall. I think the only online game I've enjoyed in the past few years is Ridge Racer on the Vita, mainly because I love RR and I'm not that shit at it.
Yeah, it's pretty much Retro Only for me, but with exceptions like GTA V, and Gran Turismo 5. I agree with the rest though.
what is retro? it's a matter of perspective! (as stated earlier in the thread) ... i play whatever takes me by the knackers, can be anything. that said, i've regressed BIG-TIME since the ps4, xbone and wiiu... the xbox, ps2 etc (and further back) tend to get the love. ps3? not so much (since AT3)...and the 360? what a chunk of shit that is! (at least it was given FREE, so no faults on that) .... waiting to get throttled again by something in the present.. age crept up too soon, not holding breath or WASTING time on the EVIL known as HOPE! (i've got a LOT of backlog to get through, doubt i'll EVER be 'up-to-date' in this life!)
