Has anyone else heard about this yet? I'm sure people remember "VAST" the vaporware and "Memor32" the overpriced USB memory card. Both of these figured out a way to boot homebrew and DVD-Rs directly. Apparently they figured out how to sign or encrypt executables so the PS2 thinks they are something like the official DVD player updates.

Anyway, some people came up with their own freeware project called Free MCBoot. It uses the same idea of making a signed executable that it boots so you can boot your own program like a menu to load anything else.

I've tried it out today and it is pretty nice as it boot to the menu significantly faster than the PS2 Ind exploit that used a ps1 trigger disc. Since it skips the whole animation it normally has it's pretty nice. Good way to boot HDLoader.

And another program was released today simply called ESR, which does what the Memor32/Memento people did for profit, which is boot your DVD-Rs. And it may even do a better job of it than Memento. I find this pretty satisfying as I thought the Memento people were assholes from the start.

But this should be useful for anyone with a PS2 that would want to run homebrew or DVD-Rs as now you don't need anything other than a memory card.

I've wanted to try it out for some time
but there is the problem that you need a way to boot homebrew in order to install this to run homebrew ;)

It is really cool, esspecially with ESR that came out today. Nothing fancy required to boot whatever you want on a DVD-R. You could obviously use that for backups, pirate "backups", homebrew, beta, etc. I mainly find it interesting as no swapping is required for discs. That was one of the main reasons I started using HDLoader, that and the speed boost.

Supposively ESR's compatibility with backup games may be higher than Memento due to a different design/different code. I've heard someone say they think Memento is handling all reading in a synced manner or something, basically things stop while data loads which many games don't do that as they load asyncronously like streaming stuff in. I don't really know though, I wouldn't pay for that Memento crap.

Babu, all you need is a way to put a file on your memory card as well as a fat PS2. Then you can install the independance exploit to install free mcboot. Or better yet, just have a friend with Swap Magic or a modchip or their own Free MCBoot install it on a card for you.

Well that's the problem, I don't have a way to put it on a memory card myself.
And none I know (around here at least) can help me as most have sold their PS2 or it simply have died on them.

Actually that's the other perk. It works on all PS2s because all PS2's Sony designed so they could sign/encrypt their own executables to run off a memory card. So you can use it with a PSTwo though obviously you can't do HDLoader.

babu, maybe Datel has a product you could use? Or maybe one of those DexDrive type devices. I'm not totally sure how you can install the original PS2 exploit, as I just burned the install files to a CD-R and used SwapMagic way back in the day.

I'd put it on a memory card for you but I'm in the US so postage wouldn't be nice. :p

One method would be to get the SwapMagoc Coder discs, which have an option to load ELF files from a USB Pendrive. Then just put the install files on the pendrive and use the swapmagic's ability to load a homebrew file from the USB. Then I suppose you could sell the SwapMagic disc. The irony of it all being that you never actually have to use the Swaping function of SwapMagic.

Again I think there is a Datel product like Action Replay of some variation that can load homebrew for you. The thing about this is that your executable must be signed or encrypted in relation to a unique Memory Card ID that is different on every memory card. Thus you need to install it by running a program on a real PS2. Unlike the PS2's PS1Drv exploit which just required some files on your card to be present meaning you could use a dexdrive type of device.

I still prefer HDloader just because running off the HDD is better. I didn't even really use it to play bootlegs, but backups. Nothing beats putting like 40 ps2 games on a HDD and taking it anywhere you want without carrying games.

I wish it was possible with the 360. I can't wait for digital distribution to pick up as well. I'm fine with my games stored on a HDD.

4 hours and a lot of googling later and i still havent found a solid piece of information about these exploits or the exploits in general, just lots of shady websites with lots of messy info.

From what I understood so far it is also possible to install an exploit on the memory card without a swapmagic, it can be done by building some sort of PSX cd-based exploit or something lol
    im confused xD

Having a physical disk doesn't really matter to me. I'd rather have whole games on a HDD than installing 5 gigs while still needing the disk. My ps2 games ran great on a HDD, and it amazes me how that technology exists, but we're still forced to pay $60 retail prices for games that are on disks. But then again, I thought HDD's would become standard after the Xbox.

One of my 360's cracked two games while they were in the drive. I couldn't do anything about it. $120 wasted, plus I had to use a retailer warranty for a new 360. If a HDD dies, you could always just redownload the game again, like you can on XBL.

    This one? http://www.gamesx.com/mccap/
Yeah I've looked at it before, but wasn't sure if it support PS2 memory cards?

edit: read a bit on that forum and seems that it not just that easy on the PS2 thanks to the Magic Gate thing on the memory cards.
