Man, you guys expect too much. It's a movie made by someone who only ever makes qp minute Web videos or mini movies as a kid with a camcorder. None of us here could do any better. Take it for what it is. A cheap fan service movie. Sure, it's not like his Web videos but that's OK with me.
Well, he does have some solid experience in editing and his equipment is far better than just a camcorder. The camera used for the movie cost $5k as far as I know.. not much in movie industry standards, but a whole lot more than what they used for movies like Bad Taste. At $300k+ I think you'd insult James by calling it 'cheap take-it-or-leave-it fan-service'... it's very much in the range of other low budget productions that turned out to be really good movies, e.g. Napoleon Dynamite ($400k) or mentioned Bad Taste, which only cost $11,000 to make back in 1980-1987 despite all the crazy special effects. Yet have to see the movie, but it seems that people are more upset about the plot and storytelling than about technical execution. Still, I'm excited and looking forward to it. I just hope there's enough nerd content aside from the monster BS.
Well his only camera experience is just shooting stuff for web videos. It drives me nuts too when they have good cameras to work with but they just shoot it super clean and don't bother trying to make it look like 35mm. I'm not expecting much from this movie and honestly it's really just made for the avgn fans. But yea it is a bummer when you see this kinda result with the budget and resources he had. I can't make a comment on it unless I see it but watching trailer felt it's just fan service movie and it is what it is.
Even if he had a few million the movie wouldn't be any better. It's all down to the limits of the creators. Since this was his first big feature length movie I'm not going to be very critical of it. His next tho go shopping under be better due to experience gained from this movie. EDIT: do people expect this to be a none stop barrel of laughs? If you do then you will be disappointed. I didn't expect such a thing or a lengthy AVGN episode. Maybe that's why I don't dislike the movie as much as others?
Still have to see the movie, and judging by everyone's comments I'd better wait until I'm really in the mood. I didn't expect it to be the greatest thing in the world, but you guys made it sound almost bad. Off-topic, but I'd love to see more of Kyle. That dude is brilliant, yet criminally underused. The Ikari Warriors episode had me in stitches. Doing sth similar, maybe while going through 2-3 themed games, could easily fill a whole hour.
Funny you should say that because to my he ruined that Ikari Warriors episode. So much so that I didn't even wat to watch to the end. Everyone has their on likes and disslikes I guess.
It was kind of a disappoint. After the half point, so many things happened and I was like what is going on.
I felt that it was a great movie and I was extremely surprised at how they tied ET into the plot in such an original way. Besides this is an indie movie, it isn't the quality that comes from Hollywood, and it isn't the same quality as the short films he made in high school with a camcorder. There were a couple points that the effects looked a little cheesy, but the effects do look good because they were using actual props and CGI.
There was 2 things that stood out to me that completely ruined it. 1. The lack of AVGN characters as full time movie characters. Over the period of time waiting for the AVGN movie, Mike took over Cinemassacre with his own personal reviews. I think in return built a fan base for Mike and a lot of people (including myself) expected him to act in it (in a major way). But serious, Brendan "Bootsy" Castner and Mike Matei should have been the supporting cast not some unknown, never seen in AVGN stuff actors. 2. The love interest. I hated every scene that included that chick. He was an awful actress, she has extremely cheesy lines and her fighting scenes they kept cutting to felt like it was forced. I don't know why James decided to have her character in it at all. I think James should release an other version without her parts in it. That might actually make for a better movie. It's like James reviews of movie cliches that he (i thought) didn't know fully went into this movie. and that sucked.
I watched it the other day and I'm not all too amazed. Would give it a 2/5, but even that's sort of a stretch. I was actually pretty close to giving this flick the lowest possible score. Some things that bothered me: - Absolute low-quality acting, particularly the girl and the military guys. So bad, it's not even funny in my opinion - Awful CGI. He loves real effects, then why use such cheesy CGI even though it's not necessary? - Lengthy plot and movie was way too long - Dialogues kind of sucked. Again, mostly because of bad actors but also they're written quite purpose-oriented rather than in good style.. or so it seemed Not much else to say. Bad movie, great show. I'll continue watching his episodes but I better forget about this excursion into feature film.
I agree. I would also add that they could have made James's character more angry. Ie. Instead of willingly going on this quest so voluntarily, he could have been made very angry with all the attention his reviews were getting and just did the quest just to get people to screw off (out of his life). it would play out more natural IMHO.
I watched the movie last week. It was about 20 - 30 minutes too long for me. Too many things going on in the plot, but otherwise, I think that this was a very good effort.
