With the 360 being flooded with them and Ikaruga doing farily well on live arcade as well as geometry wars love spreading everywhere. Do you think Shmups are making a comeback? To where they actually stand a chance of selling well now? Like for example, the VC on the wii is introducing a whole new generation of gamers to Gradius III.
No. They are just obvious candidates for PSN/Live! ports, being quick on action and shallow enough for short play.
Shoot em ups are dead, theres just a very small amount of freaks left who are too addicted to ignore new releases like all the other gamers who accepted 3D as the now and then.
Shoot'em ups aren't dead, there's just more casual gamers playing games now so there's more focus on the likes of GTA etc. Yakumo
for me, growing up, i didn't play very many shmups. i played a lot more platformers and beat'em ups. just recently i've started getting into shooters. i've imported a couple and bought some over here, like Raiden III and DoDonPachi. Very fun games!
What I meant was that the development of shoot em ups almost stopped. I mean hey, many people even complain that great stuff like Ketsui doesn't appear as shitty download but as a DVD release. I love shoot em up games although I didn't grow up with them at all, but thats not how the casual gamer thinks. I appreciate every new Cave-, Grev and Treasure-shooter to be released, but I don't think that 2D-shooters have a future like racing games or rpgs as they are still just the prequel to 3D shooters. Still I would sell every Gears of War or Half Life for a great shooter PCB.
I don't think they're doing either, I think there will always be a shmups as a underground culture. I can't see them becoming truely popular or dying completely, though it may possibly become more indie over the years.
How can something that's never been away be making a comeback? Unless you're a casual who needs a game to hold your hand every step of the way.
Not to mention that the very center of Ikaruga's box for the Gamecube version has an IGN quote on it.
That too. Ikaruga is legendary even among non hardcore gamers. I let my friend who's 16 he's like my little brother anyways I let him borrow Ikaruga. He LOVES IT. He's also doing way better than I do after playing it since it came out. And I'm sure alot of the non hardcore gamers in my age group (25-30) still play and hold Gradius dearly.
To the mainstream they're dead. There's only one company putting out high quality new stuff. That's hardly viable for a genre. There's still plenty of fans about on this side of the world but at this point, they'll play anything: even the tripe that comes out a couple of times a year (anything by Triangle Service or Milestone, specifically). Plenty of shooter fans think RSG & Ikaruga are far overrated. I'm not one of them, but I respect the opinion.
I THOUGHT Ikaruga was overrated but now I apprecate it genius and design and yes Milestole is trash also while I'm at it Shikigami no Shiro III has no right being on Wii.
