I purchased my XBOX 360 2/10/06 what follows is events of the last weeks. 2/10 Amazed to see shelf stocker walk out with a 360 premium. Was told it was their shipment for the week. Bought the unit and DOA4. 2/11 Bought Perfect Dark, PGR3 and set the unit up. 2/12 Unit sometimes won't sync with TV. Have to power off unit and restart it. Strange. 2/13 Unit sometimes won't detect controller as player one. Must restart system. 2/14 Unit powers on but no boot up. Strange thing, restarted 360, plays fine. 2/16 Unit turned on with one red light, no boot. Restarted, unit works. 2/18 Bought DOA4 Stick, Media Controller, Stand, Two faceplates. 2/20 Bought Full auto. Have not opened it yet as of 2/22 2/21 Played first DVD. Unit freezes when play starts, like on pause. No response to menu or play button. Unit gives red light on bottom right quadrant of "ring of light". 2/22 Unit refuses to play DVD. Games work, sometime unit won't boot. 2/22 Contacted microsoft. Hotline consultant did not know how to handle error, placed on hold. Fowarded to french speaking microsoft support. Messages in french about tres red lights.. 5 Min wait. Consultant takes down details, I am placed on hold for a few minutes. Comes back and we register the unit and at the same time, file the repair request ^_^; 5 min wait Issued a ticket for replacement unit, to be shipped within... two weeks... I am to ship the core unit back. So that is my twelve days of Xbox 360. It was fun while it lasted. Total 360 expenditure to date: $834.70 Days of use: 12 Cost to me per day of total working use: $69.55 Two week repair/exch. = 53.8 % downtime
My jap unit works fine and has done since day one, doesn't get too hot and doesn't have any lock up's or anything like that.I think it must be a problem that is specific to one of the manafacturing plant's of the console.
It is possible to get support with a Japanese unit through your importer. That is why I paid a bit extra to get one through a UK based company. They do a year warranty on new import hardware and 90 day on second hand. They just replace it if something goes pear-shaped. Well worth it in my opinion. I was certainly not going to risk it, aware of all the horror stories from the American launch. But seriously, sorry to hear you have had so much bother with your unit.
Man, that really sucks. I can't believe you have only had it for 12 days and it dies on you. Is M$ sending you a return shipping label, or is that on your dime? ^_^_^
ASSEMbler, considering you save a lot of your money and usually wait, Im kind of surprised you bought an Xbox 360 when it was still new.
I think he decided to adopt it early to further reinforce upon himself and all of us, that buying a modern console at launch is a risky thing.
Glad to see you are having loads of fun with your new 360 ASSEMbler! OT: servicegames, arent you the one that released propeller arena?
Maybe you'll get lucky and Microsoft will hook you up like they did for my buddy Dan. He got a core unit which died in about 2 weeks, sent it back to them. Two weeks later, he recieves a brand new 360, but this one is a premium bundle, hard drive and all. I wonder if this sort of thing happens a lot or if he was just a unique case.
Sounds like it was defective from the start. Best of luck on the exchange, hope you get a working one soon.
That's just bad luck period. The only problem I've had with my launch 360 is that synch problem with the TV and that was only when I first hooked it up. Maybe the rush to get more systems out put a dent on quality control.
Actualy I recomend / sudgest sending it back without the HDD. All they will do is ship you a box via dhl. All you're supost to do is put the core console in the unit (nothing else) and ship that back to them (everything is pre-payed). A person on IGN sent a prem unit back with out the HDD and was sent a replacement with hdd and a letter saying they've upgraded his unit to a premium. Over all ms is probably just confirming they get the unit in and shipping back something they have ready to go.
This is exactly what happened to my friend. His premium broke so they told him to send just the unit w/ no HD in the box they sent him. 3 days later he received a new unit w/ a HD. So its likely you will get a spare HD.
Only if you buy MS in my experience. My first gen PSX died on me after four years, but that was 6 months after catching fire (my brother and dad's fault). My first gen PS2 is still kicking with no sign of dying. I've never had any problems with any of my Sega or Nintendo systems. However, everyone I've known who owned a first gen Xbox has had to replace or repair it. Sorry, ASSEMbler. Hope your new one works out for you. At ~$70 a day with only 12 days of playtime, I hope they pay for shipping. Though they probably won't.
Not to build your ego ASSEMbler, but you definitely hold a higher status in the gaming world than your average 50 cent:bulletproof playin' preteen. This is such bad PR for Microsoft to have a well known site like yours dissing their machine. I am going to continue to hold off until the bugs are fixed. In my own experience, I am on my second XBOX and my THIRD PS2. My gamecube, after hours of me on RE4 and my wife on Animal Crossing, still runs like a dream. I usually play an hour a day, so in my opinion, these machines, save the Gamecube, are not cost effective products, as you have discovered with the XBOX 360.
They had better called their 'Ring of Light' the 'Ring of Fire', considering all the bugs early adopters seem to come across...
