I installed 64bit windows 7, as I needed some software that required 64bit, and I'd finally be making the most of my 4gbs of ram. I installed it and right from the outset its been kinda crappy.

First, performance in general is pretty crap, firefox/vlc often freezes. Boot time is pretty long for a less than one month installation

And it still doesn't recognize 4gbs of ram

    Specs are as follows:
    MS Windows 7 64-bit SP1
    E5400 @ 2.70 GHz
    4GB Ram (3.25gb usable
    ATi 5770

    And I guess that's all you'll need?

    Weird

I don't know I have a similar set up and performance is smooth as silk for a 2 1/2 year old laptop

This is more of a general observation than anything else, but I've found 64-bit (OS use) to be a bit more dicey than just 32-bit. Generally it comes down to issues mixing 32-bit and 64-bit apps and technologies together. But again, your mileage will vary greatly depending on the OS and software support in question.

    I had the same problem..
If you haven't already, update every driver, reinstall Windows 7 and reseat your RAM and hope for the best.

I install Windows 7 Ultiamte myself- not 1 blue screen, unless I update Java.

It's not as bad as when you buy a computer with windows preinstalled. And then they don't give you an installation disc. So much pain. And bloatware.

to my knowledge, this: 4GB Ram (3.25gb usable) means that you have 4Gb of ram in your machine and 750Mb of it is currently in use.
i thought about it not regognizing my ram either, but i followed this a while and nothiced how the number changed every now and then.

im not sure how often it does that or even if im right or not, but it just doesn't add up to me how it would regognize a different amount of memory depending on the day you use the PC.
also, my machine at home (win7 ultimate 64) doesn't even have the (xxx usable) stated at all, but the one i have at work does.

I think its more complicated than that. It would be more suitable for your computer to say 750mb in use or something. Go into task manager and you will probably see that the 750mb is not what is in use.

The 3.25gb usable comes from 32bit where it only recognises 3.25gb. 32bit wont recognise 4gb's. I installed 64bit hoping it would and it still does. I've also noticed since VLC will just randomly stop and you can hear my harddrive spin up and then VLC will begin playing again. Only happened since 64bit.

Is 64bit just junk for my current set up?

Windows is kind of a funny beast. You can run a 32-bit OS and see all 4GB of memory if you run a kernel that supports PAE extensions. Windows XP actually supports this, but Microsoft intentionally degrades Windows XP 32-bit so that your forced to upgrade and pay for a higher level licence. (>_<).

I suggest you try running a 64-bit live CD for Linux and then give VLC a run for it's money. If you don't notice anything wrong with playback, then your machine is fine and Windows is just being a tool. If you still get performance issues, perhaps something more serious is at work.

3.25GB usable I thought only happens in 32bit, when I switched to x64 my 4GB was usable. So it's rather weird you're only seeing 3.25GB :/

With VLC stuttering or completely locking up, keep an eye on your memory while watching something and see if it just rockets up. I'd suggest doing some Memory Diagnostics. Maybe your RAM is fucking up, possibly.

Have you installed through genuine Windows 7 disc? If you've downloaded one, it could have an injected virus of some sort...

It is but its one I trust.

the 32bit I was using was on the same disc and I never had issues like this. Even monitored my network to make sure I wasn't part of a botnet.

I used Active@ hard disk monitor to verify my hard drives. My Samsung 1tb drive (newer and supposedly more reliable) is 67% health. My WesternDigital green 750gb hard drive (far older and ment to be crap) is at 82% health (Go Figure.) Both health issues were with the spin up time.

My temps aren't too bad and I'll run memtest86 soon.

From my friend, using the EXACT same iso and 64bit I used.
So I guess its Firefox being ass because it's 32bit. Doesn't seem to be any official 64bit version and I'd really like to use that extra 750mb of ram.

I did the same thing, it was a 48in1 ISO? If so those are bugged beyond bugged. It's just crap, try and find someone with a genuine disc and use a loader. I went back to Vista for the same reason, was messing around with my FPS. Did all sorts of scans etc to make sure it was fine. It's just not worth "obtaining" an OS you use all the time. Save yourself hassle :)

Yeah it's an Orbit30 one and I was about to but I haven't had an issue today. Is there any official x64 versions of firefox/vlc I could try before finding a better ISO?

Wait you're using a custom Windows 7? Try and find an untouched copy...

Reminds me of the day of "Black XP" -_-

    Never download modded OS ISO's.

Always get retail/untouched and install your own shit.

If you want a "30 in 1" make it yourself, its not very hard.

No no, it just has multiple version on it. I.e. it has Windows 7 Home, Pro and ultimate in both 32bit and 64 bit on it. I'll make a live disc of a untouched ISO soon then and reformat. Im not daft enough to use Windows XP black edition.

I'd like to pay for 64bit windows 7. I really would, but I aren't dropping all that money on it. It running like crap and then not being able to return it.

    8,00 GB (3,44 GB usable)

Are you using 64bit? Pirated or legit?

Built my own PC, installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 - no blue screens or issues whatsoever. Seriously, ever.
