Yes you can - it says block app like he said. I think it is tucked away in some stupid place, though. Well, some say "block this application" on the list of spam you've received (I mean events ;-)) but other than that...
I've been actively refusing to get a FB account for years. hehe. Got me one after some colleagues managed to convince me that it was good to have. Almost never use it. And after I got it, some person called me at work trying to offer me some other job o_Ô
I've never found that option, probably because it is tucked away somewhere stupid! :banghead: I also love the idea of an option to switch off, or have a holiday from apps! God, do they annoy the crap out of me!
twimfy, am i the only one that agrees with you? i dont see any problem in adding people with the same interests and maybe create/getting a little close to the community.. i have nothing to hide allthough i agree to some level of anonimity but thats more address wise/phone numbers and what not which i never post on social sites anyway.. even my real full name can't be found anywhere and nobody can see your FB profile anyway without actually adding you as a friend.. and while we do have some topics going where most of you posted pics of themselfs and even their wifes/gfs and kids this somehow is a no go? anyway i already have you in my FB twimfy, its always handy in case of dealing with each other and creating a higher level of trust like this.. and who knows if our or other members paths ever cross we can maybe grab a coffee somewhere and discuss retro games!! the only problem i see is exchanging the FB names to each other is this should be done in a non indexed secret topic or by pm.. because you guys are all cool but being indexed by google is another story but this is probably not an issue for everybody so for who doesn't give a * go ahead ill add you
No please no, Facebook is bad news and trouble, it would draw way too much attention on our community. Facebook is fun but really a bit boring in the end... I would have less of a problem creating a group on Home to play games and randomly chat, but let's keep gaming discussions in this forum.
People keep saying that it would draw attention and disclose personal details. However a secret group has absolutely no way of being seen by anyone unless you've been invited by the group admin. It can't be searched, and I've done a little googling and they appear to be unindexed (although I don't know much about the web so can't be 100% sure if that's possible). As far as secret goes, it's pretty damn secret unless someone is looking over your shoulder at it. The original idea behind this was along the lines of port187's post. Simply an extra leg of communication between members. It can't draw attention to the site if it can't be seen by anybody.
OK, and how do you get invited? You have to give out your personal details!! If the group is secret, you can't see who's in there. You don't know the other people, and that's a bit creepy. Sure, you're inviting ASSEMbler members, but you DON'T KNOW who they are, really. Do you see what I'm saying? My Dad's ex boss, a lovely man, is in prison for tax evasion and murder. Who'd have expected THAT? OK, you're a fool if you give out personal details on Facebook, but at minimum you're giving out your name. My name is a very unusual one, I would be easy to trace, so no thanks. I have a lot of stuff that other people would want. I'm not doing anything to jeopardize that. Admittedly, Facebook is not the only way to trace someone, but it makes it easier.
Yeah, that's what I don't understand. Facebook is meant to keep you in contact with friends. The groups are to talk to people who share common interests. As the common interest is this community, doesn't it seem a bit pointless to set up another community elsewhere for people who are already here?
If you Block and application upon receiving an invite you get no more for that app. At most I get 1 app invite a week now.. It's under 'Accept' and 'Ignore' as a standard, small hyperlink..
No. Sorry, I think the fact that AG is obscure makes it attractive. If you put it on facebook, you kill it. Period.
Actually, with a secret group the members of it can see all other members of said group. It's hidden from everyone else (that is, non-members). I guess the only 'personal info' you would need to give would be your name and network. Plenty of people have posted their names on this site, shoot even posted pictures of themselves here. I view the potential facebook group as just another extension of the community, for those interested of course, to allow us to perhaps get to know each other a little better.
That should have said you can't see who's in there BEFORE you join ;-) Those people will then see your name, photo, network(s) and location. If you are John Smith that's fine, but if you're Arnold Schwarzenegger and you live in Beverley Hills, California, all someone needs do is pick up the Beverley Hills phone book and you'll probably be the only A. Schwarzenegger in there. Address found. Sure, you can not display your town and delete your photo or you can be unlisted in the phone book, but why should I have to do that? Facebook is for me to contact my friends, people I trust, not relative strangers. That's how I personally use it. If I want to contact any of you, I'll do so here. I realize there are other ways to track someone down online - I just think it foolish that you would combine a method of tracking you down with a group of people who know of a reason to track you down. Now, I'm not saying anyone here would go robbing people, but you get my point.
Ok yeah an extra leg of communication'd be cool, good initiative. I have a Facebook profile myself and it's cool connect with friends who are far away, but not sure you want to know that "Sabre470 is playing Barbie Adventure" or "Sabre470 thinks PC-FX is the best system in the world" now do you? Yep group would be secret I agree, but data is all visible to Facebook, imagine Facebook gets aqcuired by Sony, they would certainly dislike the idea of us sharing protos and betas. Facebook is great idea but it's a step back in terms of freedom on the Internet. You don't have full control of your data, it's a pain to get your data completely erased, plus Facebook is desperate to make money out of the site, anything goes for them. OK I'm a bit on the paranoid side, but I just don't think Facebook is a good place for something like Assembler, sure if we were doing gardening, horse racing or just trading released games fine... What I like about this forum is that it is self contained, opened to the public but people know me as Sabre470 they don't need to know me by my real name unless we trade or become friends. These days it's all about voyeurism, people need to know who does what, when and with who, look at google latitude, people would know where you are anytime??? It's bad enough I have a mobile and people call me on it, "hello how are you what you doin'? Shut up bitch..." now they would know where I go??? Seriously is Google replacing Big Brother??? OK I'm done with the whinging, don't mean to be rude, my opinion that is all
I was bored last night too, have a try with this, a terrain generator: http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/ It's really cool and easy to use you can even do animation if you want and it's free for personal use. It is used by the guys making the LOTR sequel, www.thehuntforgollum.com
