Hey Everyone,I was thinking about creating a MAME cab using the up coming Asus eee Box 206. It has HDMI output, small footprint, ATI Radion 3453 HD graphics, and 1.6GHz Atom N270.Anyone think this would be suitable for the job? The most complicated things I would expect to run on this thing would be games like SF3, MvC2, etc. And if possible, perhaps some PS2 emulation.Perhaps it's a little too heavy for this box to do, but I have no concept about hardware performance these days in regards to games. Nor do I know much about graphics cards these days in regards to peformance.
Well, I don't think PS2 emulation is possible at all with that kind of hardware...SFIII might work, I'm not too sure about how demanding CPS3 emulation is. You sure about the model of that graphics card? I couldn't find anything with Radeon 3453.
I'm not totally sure, but I think thats what one website listed. In regards to running PS2 emulation, does it even work that well right now? I guess the same goes for the case of emulating games like Tekken Tag (Is that even possible?). Ya, I'm not even sure if it can do CP3 ok, so thats why I'm wondering.
Your biggest problem using the Eee box is not the graphics card, its the processor. The Atom CPU is great and all but its designed in a similar fashion to what was used in the original Pentiums and to some extent the 486. It can only execute 2 instructions per cycle, compared to 6 on the Core 2 or 3 in the original Pentium 4. PS2 Emulation is not going to happen on the meek little Atom. Owning two netbooks myself, The EeePC 701 (Celeron 900mhz), and an Acer Aspire One (Atom 1.6Ghz) and the Eee can beat the pants off the Acer in a few CPU intensive tasks.
PS2 emulation has come a long way, but it'll never work well on a box like that. Youll be lucky to emulate Dreamcast for MvC2. Youre almost better off going with a modded Xbox 1, has MvC2, and SF3, plus a good CPS3 emulator and other stuff
Your Atom 1.6GHz is enough for N64 emulation (slowdowns in Goldeneye, PD, Conker, ect, but else works playable), but for anything more advanced, don't bet on it.
So by the by (I know the eee pc can't do it), but is PS2 emulation actually good? Such that a good portion of games run perfectly fine provided you have the processor and graphics for it?
Hey! heres an idea! get a damn PS2! That machine is a headache and probable we wont see a perfect emulation in our lifetimes, so do yourself a favor and wait until every PS2 in the world is broken beyond repair to run a emulator.
Yeah, pretty much the only game for PS2 that is emulated almost perfectly is Final Fantasy X. Other than that, buy the system! A used PS2 shouldnt be more than 40 or 50 USD nowadays.
