At long last: DC Set2.1 up and running!

Discussion in 'Rare and Obscure Gaming' started by jollyrogerdev, Jul 3, 2004.

  1. Hello everybody, at long last I managed to successfully install the Sega Dremcast Set 2.1 prototype board on my computer, together with Windows 95, R2 SDK and drivers, etc...
It works fine, so expect a number screenshots of the R2 demos very soon.

    Stay tuned :)

  7. Here we go!

Hey guys, I managed to grab some shots and videos.
The quality is not very good, I had to use my digital camera to take both pictures and videos, does anybody have a spare video capture card? :)

Here is one shot from the Scud Race demo, the rest is on my site: http://jollyrogerdev.ath.cx

Man, that looks great !!! Thanks for the pictures.

Why the hell did'nt they make the final game? Would have been a hell of a lot better than Sega Rally.

    Man I could cry.

Scud Race/Super GT would give me need to take interest in my Dreamcast:(

The Ferrari from Drive2 is in the SDK R10 - it was in a tech demo pretty much identical to the teapot test (which is also found in the DreamOn Ginsu thingymebob!) -_- Also the boot logo is entirely different from the Set 5.24 Dev Box. Maybe you can compile some of the Kamui / PowerVR demo's?

  11. Yes, I have seen the F40 in the R10, I don't remember seeing the Porsche anywhere else though.

The SEGA logo is not a boot logo, is one of the Ninja lib demos.

The Drive2, Scud Race and a couple more demos come only as executables, all the other Kamui and Ninja and demos come as both sources and executables, so I have all of them in a ready to run shape.

They are pretty much all tech demos, showing various texture modes, background layers, light sources, etc...

    ...

cool stuff...most of the demos are not even remotely good looking or interesting to a non developer( i find them bad looking,so do not really bother ) in contrast to the scud race demo that was based on a popular game and served the purpose to show off that Early Dreamcast hardware could easily do Model3 stuff...If you want to watch cool demos download some cool looking PC benchmarks or Demos.

Also wanted to ask you jolly, what system and OS did you use for the tests?Did you experience any problems?

  14. I used my current PC to run the demos. It is an Athlon64 with 1GB RAM, ATI 9600, etc...
I had to fight for a while to manage to install Windows 95 on the computer, as it has a lot of small troubles running on a very recent machine.
The worst problem I had was to manage to get the card on a free enough IRQ, if you don't do it the system locks straight away when you launch the demos and you have to hard reset.
I didn't want to remove everything from the computer so I had to adjust some of the BIOS settings and I moved the card a few times to different PCI slots.
I also tried with Win 98 but it recognised too many devices and filled up all IRQs with drivers, I couldn't manage to remove enough of them to run the card without stripping the computer to bits...

i finally got to see the videos today. I must say that they are very impressive. It makes me wonder why Sega Rally 2 is so crap on the Dreamcast. Was it because it was rushed or was it thanks to the windows CE tools? I have to admit that everything action packed made with windows CE tools is below par.

I wonder why SEGA didn't use the cars from the Drive 2 demo on the Scud demo...

Probably both. A rushed job on windows CE tools. It's still a good game.

Anyway, this Sega Super GT/Scud Race demo appears to be a very early demo. The Model 3 (Step 1.5) arcade game was way more impressive than that in terms of graphics. And we all know the Dreamcast could do Model 3 graphics easily, since it's almost a Naomi system.

What really annoys me, is that Sega, having tons of succesful franchises and fantastic arcade games, simply didn't ported them to the DC. Here is just a small list:

    - Sega Super GT / Scud Race
    - The Lost World : Jurassic Park -> Great Shooting Game
    - Daytona USA 2 -> I know Daytona USA was released, but this game should have been a launch title. Plus i think 99% of the people that like the game would love to see a port of the original Model 2 Arcade Game, Daytona USA. One of the most succesfull arcades ever.
    - Emergency Call Ambulance -> This game would work way better on a console.
    - SpikeOut

These are just Model 3 games. Not counting Naomi and Model 2 games.
