(Note: If there is already a thread like this please lock it) If there is one thing I hate about american companies is when they change the nice, anime-style covers of japanese games with more mature, macho, realistic or cartoonist ones which most times are very ugly and/or they give a different feeling which doesn't suit at the game at all. Here are some examples (some of them like Megaman are very famous for their superb ugliness): Pocky and Rocky (SNES) japanese cover: american cover: Rodland (Arcade, Misc formats) japanese cover: american cover: Athena (Arcade, Misc formats) japanese cover: american cover: Guardian Heroes (Sega Saturn) japanese cover: american cover: You can some other examples at this link: http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2009/...ame-characters-muscles-vs-moe/#comment-148182
Eh, not all of the American covers are that bad. Anything with less anime is okay by me. The style is just so over-saturated.
I was gonna say Starfox for the SNES, but I looked at the Japanese cover and it was pretty awful as well.
haha, first glimpse at the title of this thread and my initial impression was that this is some sort of news topic: "awful american, covers for japanese gamers"
those all are still SO harmless compared to most of the PCE -> TG-16 port covers! we all know well of how awful ugly they're looking, so I do not have to waste any further effort to post them here!
Good Lord, I think I need to play that game. Seriously. Personally I'll usually prefer a realistic American illustration to a Japanese anime-style one, if that's the choice.
http://assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=606 The original thread of garishness. I'd love to see more added/links updated.
You really can't get any uglier than PAL Master System boxes. A few are in the old thread but I didn't see this posted: (sorry about the watermarks) This was the cover for the European version of the Rambo game, which in turn was a version of a Japanese game called Ashura. I have no idea why they didn't use the Rambo license in Europe, but this is what Europe got instead: a mouthless man with a mullet and a Nerf gun. Also, to add insult to injury, the title screen in fact says the game is called Secret Commando.
While I completely agree that the western counterparts for box art are a fucking joke (even today which is a bit apalling) that this thread topic is the proverbial beaten horse.
just check this link, there are tons of. it will satisfy you: http://www.defunctgames.com/shows.php?id=commercialbreak-15 and also don't forget to read the uberfunny comments.
