I've had a 2nd model non-bc PS3 for a long while and recently aquired a BC model. Works perfectly so far(5 or so hours), though it seems very loud in comparison. Even slightly louder than my 360 Elite. Are the original models normally loud, or is there overheating related YLOD in my future?
I do not have a BC PS3, however My PS3 slim was getting loud and it turned out to be dust build up in all the vents on the bottom and back of the PS3 Slim. What I did was take my vacuum cleaner's attachment hose and sucked out all the dust from all the vents. I don't know if you have tried that yet but you might want to consider it. My brother-in-law has a BC PS3 and I have always been able to hear his PS3 running when I play games with him. I hope that helps. -Disjaukifa
Its loud enough, but not loud enough to be a distraction. Cant hear it over the TV really, and no where near as loud as my 360 elite.
It should not be as loud as a 360. Is it well ventilated? I use my vertically and it really helps with cooling.
It's quiet at the beginning but it gets louder when the console gets hot (after a couple of hours of play time I'd say), the slim is quieter overall.
Took the suggestion and vacummed the vents and opened the top of the console to vacumm inside as well. Lots of dust cleaned out, so that should help in the long run. Still gets loud after 30-40 minutes. I'll open it up again tomorrow and take out the motherboard so I can clean the fan on the bottom.
If you are brave enough you could open it up and replace the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU. Thats what i did to my BC 60gig PS3. Took me a whole afternoon though ...lots of screws I tell ya!
Well I've used my PS3 to play the Persona series recently and its worked really well no loud noises and even when I'm playing a PS3 game or just watching a film its really quiet! My PS3 is the launch 60 gig model in the UK hope this helps!
60gb us model it's like a jet engine sometimes. i've opened it and cleaned it out (~2 months ago) but it didn't help all that much. installing an oem 19 blade fan is said to make things quieter
Mine is loud enough. It used to be *too* loud for my tastes, but then I opened it and gave it a good clean. I was going to put some Arctic Silver 5 on there at that point, as per some suggestions online, but couldn't find my tube of it. Maybe a good tip: The left side (or bottom, obviously, if it's put vertically) has no vents on it. I'd say it's theoretically better to keep it planted against the left wall if you have it enclosed in something, which gives the vents on the right side ("top") plenty of room.
Don't think my 60GB (PAL) is that loud at all...gets a bit hot though, on the top (side?) where the vents are. Nowhere near as loud as my 360 Elite, Q or PS2 however!
I have a software BC one and it does the same. Game or Blu-ray, the fans will always kick in into high gear after a while. It's not in an enclosed space either. *shrug* I might try the vacuum trick as well.
Cleaned the bottom out today. Pretty nasty in there. Put it back together and no leftover screws. Still loud, but at least I know its clean. Guess ill just have to get used to it.
My original 60GB PS3 seemed to gradually get louder and louder, so I sold it a few years back. I felt like it was on its way to a YLOD. I now own a non-BC 80GB (actually 2 of these).
My buddy had an 80gb BC (partial software model, that is) that began to overheat and lock-up. It was quite loud (at the time I had my 80GB non-BC and I was amazed at the volume). He sold it as a "blueray/PS2" player, locally. I wish I'd been more keen, it may have just needed a good cleaning and some new paste.
60 Gig B/C since swapped the HD to 500+ Gig It's loud no doubt, but when you see the fan you understand why.
Actually, the fan is part of the beauty of the design. The big blades allow it to spin slower and displace more air, so it is quieter than it would otherwise be.
