I think some of these cards don't have persistent firmware so you have to patch it everytime the OS boots. It was a bit scary at first but once I identified the card from the Windows driver package, specifically the .inf file I was able to get the Windows hex firmware and patch it in Linux

I've seen broadband modems that hook up to a computer via USB (instead of ethernet or Wi-Fi.) Maybe that's it.

I don't like OS X, but for those in countries where EULAs can't be enforced, I say hackintosh left and right to stick it to Apple. Apple doesn't care about you at all.

Friend calls me two years ago, says he couldn't remember his Apple ID password , so he factory reset iPad, but now it's asking for same Apple ID password to setup again. Online forum replies from Apple's brainwashed minions "You are a thief." I take him to Apple Store and he shows them original receipt, "Sorry can't help you." But I bought it, look at the receipt. "It's Apple policy." The AppleID reset didn't help, he had used previous work email to set it up. (Company went under.) I think, let's buy the domain, but someone else had grabbed it and put it up for sale. Finally, after a week, he remembers his password. Really hope they have a better solution to this issue now.

I used all three of them at the time they came out. Windows 98 felt like a step forward from '95 OSR2 - it had certain stability issues when it was first released, but these were fixed, and by the time 98SE came out it was a highly usable OS. Windows ME had some nice features on paper, but my personal experience with it was awful - it was much less stable than 98SE, and I didn't care about the added features. I ended up reformatting the machine I got with factory-installed ME, and reinstalling Windows 98SE on it. Having said that, some of my friends had no problems with it at all, so it seems to depend on which hardware you had.

I didn't like Vista much, but I didn't hate it either. IMO, the biggest problem with Vista was that it required a lot more RAM than XP did for decent performance - so people who were running XP on 512MB systems and upgraded to Vista got a very nasty shock, since a 512MB Vista system was borderline unusable. Vista with 2GB was quite nice - but that that point most people didn't have 2GB. I did, but I still ended up downgrading my Vista machine to XP so that I could use the RAM for applications rather than the OS.

I've had similar experiences with the exception that ME didn't give me too much trouble. It left a lingering bad impression that Vista was still running slow despite having 1GB RAM at launch. My personal experience was that 3GB was needed if you wanted decent performance with content creation be it using Fruity Loops, Photoshop or a good video editor.

ME, XP when it first came out, Vista (haven't messed with it since launch, maybe it got better). Nowadays I don't touch any Windows build until it's been out long enough for the kinks to be worked out. I'm beginning to think every other Win version is a natural lemon as well. Course, Linux guys says all Win versions are lemons so some of that is what you do with your pc and what your tech level is.

When there's an issue with security on Windows, Microsoft acts pretty quick. I've never really been extremely disappointed with Windows, but like any consumer product there's going to be issues.

Linux is a free, open source OS and which Windows isn't - I can't see the reason to even compare the two, is it because they're both GUIs? Pretty sure the majority of people on this forum have pirated Windows sometime in their lifetime as it's pretty easy to do so. Nearly everyone I spoke to that had Windows 7 all said "Microsoft thinks it's genuine", it was also already sold on the blackmarket before release.

I've been running Win 7 for awhile now and am fairly happy with it. Guess my comment on a Linux guy's opinion came off as a comparison? I've generally used Windows so that is where I've had my gripes. 2000 - solid, ME-hot garbage, XP was solid once the kinks were out, Vista was probably the same, I gave up on it after dealing with it on fresh laptops right after it came out. I've liked 7, and they can keep 8. Hense my every-other version is a lemon opinion.

I actually really liked Windows 8. The thing is - you really need a touch screen for it.

I hated the Metro UI. After one week of use, I already wanted to go back to Windows 7.
Luckily, a thing such as Classic Shell exists. It saved Windows 8 for me.

I think that Windows 8 was superior in every way except the UI and Windows store.
Even at launch it was much, much faster, especially if you were using a HDD.

YES!!!!! WHY?!!! I had to bring back a relative's Windows 10 when Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool decided to remove a third-party virus scanner (seriously) and broke the keyboard and network drivers/subsystems in the process. (Google the nightmare known as "Automatic Repair Loop".) Not only are there 2 control panels, it's not even like one is there for legacy reasons. Microsoft themselves instruct you to complete some tasks with "Settings" (the new control panel), and other tasks only with "Control Panel"! What the heck?!

My relative -- bless him for always purchasing licenses and all that -- always gets bitten by trusting online reviews (he buys whatever is the newly top-rated AntiVirus) and leaving default auto-update settings in place. He's asking me while I'm trying relentlessly to fix his system, "Is there an alternative to Microsoft that can run my Windows programs? Can this thing called Linux run my Windows programs?" He needs support for his business applications, so there's no way I can put him on WINE. (And by support, I mean things like having his permissions issues solved by sharing his C drive and give Everyone full permissions to everything. I am not kidding you. I am listening on speakerphone while the representative is saying this to him...)

I think Apple at least got this right. They just killed OS 9 and redesigned OS X from the ground up. No compatibility, nothing. Use Classic Mode if you want to use old stuff. I wish Microsoft had the guts to do that; to force all old stuff to run in something like Windows 7's XP Mode.

I used Ubuntu like 10 years ago, and it wouldn't accept any drivers. No network drivers to download more, no USB drivers. Basically just the pointer and keyboard.

It's because the average Windows user have no clue what they're doing.
Experienced people like ourselves think the OS is holding our hands too much, the average user likes training wheels and having their hands held.

As a win 10 user at the moment (ubuntu on side) I must really question the ethics about the hand holding (and like stated, the 2 different control panels - theres like 3 in a way but eh).

While I get its a nice thing I dont feel it would really be needed as much as they're pushing. Furthermore - the whole telemetry stuff going on (win7 and 8 have this now) really bothers me. I almost wanna make a move back to vista but everything i do now wouldnt work on it.

True, but Windows at the very least had the driver for my network card built in, so I could at least download more drivers.
