Data East wanted a Gauntlet clone and this is what they came up with. Shackled on Battle of the Ports.
Finally after 193 shows I get around to covering the iconic Donkey Kong on this week's Battle of the Ports.
Back in their day, Irem were the kings of rock solid shooters. Funny that Mr. Heli looks like an easy game but it sure is not.
The PC Engine port got some playtime on my Pi. It's like some mutant hybrid of Fantasy Zone and Twin Bee.
Nice episode Yakumo although I'm kinda disappointed you didn't mention the "Donkey Kong: Original Edition" NES port of the game that was released on the Wii virtual console in 2010 (you didn't have to go in depth about it but it would have been nice to see its existence acknowledged at the very least, especially since it put the cement stage back in making the game more complete compared to the original NES release), also you might want to consider turning the volume of the bleeps you use when you censor swear words down slightly because that high pitched sound can hurt peoples ears a higher volumes just my .02.
Another great video Yakumo. It's always funny to see 8 bit computer ports (C64 specially) being better than Atari ST / Amiga. The Speccy and the CPC also deserve a mention. It's awesome when a port focus on getting the gameplay feel right, instead of just trying to look as close as the arcade as possible... but then running like crap. It's also interesting how european devs always seemed to license less known arcade games. Cheap cost maybe?
Thanks, Paar. And here is the next episode. A really odd game this week as we take a look at Exterminator from Premier.
I don't know if it's fair to say that Premier ever released the one game. They were Gottlieb in one form or another...who had released some games, most notably Q*bert. Quibbling aside... I swear, I could fart in a box and it would be licensed for home computers in Europe.
Zero 3 is probably my favourite Street Fighter game. Nice to see it was finally covered. Owning the PS1 port, i have to say it's an impressive achievement. Specially when you consider the lower (and also slower) ammount of ram. It's probably the best CPSII port for the system. I wouldn't recommend it today, but still glad to own it. It also truly shows how the Saturn was the king of 2d fighting games. I think that overall the Saturn port is superior to the Dreamcast mainly because the RGB mode / correct sprite sizes. But it's expensive, so go for the Dreamcast... or emulation. PS: Don't know if you've seen it, but there's an Exterminator cab seen on the John's Arcade recent Galloping Ghost video. Thought you would be interested since you made a video about it recently.
The very first episode of Battle of the Ports was about a game I've loved since I was 10 years old, that game was Space Harrier. However in that very first Battle of the Ports show there was no commentary, no subtitles, ran at 30fps and worst of all only 13 ports covered. This remake of the video corrects those issues with the now expected voice-over, subtitles, 60fps video and 26 ports of Space Harrier!! Now that's what I call an update.
