Battle of the Ports

I've started a new show to fit in-between Retro Core shows. It's called Battle of the Ports and is basically a look of various ports of arcade classics. The show has no voice over, just game footage of many different ports. There has been quite a lot of people on YouTube asking for a voice over though so I may do one for the 2nd show.

Anyway, the first show features 12 different ports of Space Harrier plus the arcade original.

For those who like the high quality, I will be adding them to my site at some point in time when I finally get around to redesigning the Retro Core site.

The Spectrum port looks very interesting given the power of that machine. I didn't know it came out on the NES as well, learn something new every day

 

Eww, is there some kind of filter on the PC Engine version?

I think the Spectrum version is pretty good too. It's far closer to the arcade than the other 8 bit systems in terms of stage layout and graphics. It does sound like crap though.

Disregarding the filter, the PCE version looks very disappointing. The MS and GG versions play relatively well IMO despite being really slow.

Nice video, although I was hoping for some commentary on the controls/gameplay of the different versions...maybe next time?

I love your Video and I watched it all the way ! which quite rare for me to do so.

I didn't know that Space Harrier has so many ports over the years. While I wasn't born when Space Harrier was exist, first time I got to know this game and first time I played it is on Dreamcast - Shenmue game at Arcade shop

My opinion, Sega Mega Drive Version looks better to me. Sega CD 32X and Sharp xb8000 looks pretty similar. Original Nintendo version looks pretty good for it own age and console spec. Your video is great ! You could add the year date when it was release for each console ports. I assume that Space Harrier port is in order or mix up in your video ?

Grow up..sigh people like you just can't appreciate how these games were made back in those days. Back then is all what they had. I wish assembler banned those stupid unnecessary animated Giff, wasting the thread page.

 

Its an idea to put the release date along with the version shown. Ill think about it for the next video. Actually the next video is almost finished. Im just having issues getting a joystick to work on the Amstrad, Amiga and Spectrum. I'm going to try a different stick tomorrow.

 

Yes. I remember renting Space Harrier and my only complaint was the slow pacing. Still it looked pretty impressing back then.

Anyway, nice video as usual Yakumo. Are you planning on doing this Battle of the Ports for most of Sega arcades?

 

No pressure but it would be great ! It just makes it little bit more interesting especially for newbies like me. Are you the one who have done the video Battle of the Ports between Playstation and Sega Saturn comparison ? - Tomb Raider, Resident Evil and Die Hard ?

 

Great video! The 32X really wins IMHO, but I was pretty impressed by the Spectrum port. The Amstrad looks particularly bad by comparison!

I was wondering whether the recently completed Atari 8-bit version would be included, but since it's a fan-made port I understand the omission. Another version I discovered recently is the Sharp MZ-700 port, which is completely nuts since the system is character-graphics based. Here's a video, though unfortunately it has overdubbed sound.

Sure you do. Space Harrier was first debut in 1985 right ? So it five years older than me. Dreamcast ? Yes, Have you ever play a game called Shenmue ? (exclusive to Sega Dreamcast) during In the game, you notice that you can play Space Harrier and Hang on GP in that little Arcade shop and that how I know about Space Harrier for the first time.

So I assume that you are around what.. 30 years old now and you said "wut ?" I guess my English is really bad. Saying you know more and how these games were made and what they had back then ? That case I don't see the point why you have to bash it in the first place. bashing stuff is what kids do.

I know but if you are going to do a big game like Space Harrier then there is no reason to look at all the versions that are available, especially with a title like "Battle of the ports...." as it seems half hearted. Any fool can compare the main versions but it is nice to look at the versions that maybe people might not have seen like the squint and it looks fantastic Sharp MZ700 version.
