I like the Saturn controller but I wish Sega would have sized it up a little more. I find it to be too small. A little more weight would have helped as well.
It is. Too bad they screwed it up with the re-design. If they had simply scaled up the original it would've been much better. Just another in a long line of Sega's screw-ups with the Saturn in the US.
Oh, I agree on the N64 controller. That was poor in may respects. Crazy button layouts for many games, horrid analogue stick (IMO) and the tinny crappy D-Pad. Still, that pad does have it's fans. As for the 360 pad, maybe it was given a revamp for later releases or the Japanese pads are different than those in the west? Honestly, for 2D shooters it's perfectly fine. 2D fighters aren't so hot on it though when it comes to Dragon Punches but that's why I have a nice Hori stick. I bought my Elite 360 in November 2009 if that is any help? Is there anyone who can check an original 360 pad against a new one just to see if the did change the D-Pad. I know Sega had a few different D-Pad designs for the Mega drive. They all looked pretty much the same on the outside but inside they were slightly different. Of course some felt horrid. Yakumo
I'm fairly sure the D-Pad on themost recent re-design of the 360 Controller (the one that looks like a cross between a PS2 and original XBOX controller) had a better d-pad
Snes for old school and the dual shock 3, no idea why people seem to hate this controller. The PS3 is the console I have played the most of most probably since the I was a kid playing the SNES (due to being away from the family a lot) I have every type of genre of game imaginable (thats released on the PS3) and its a great controller for all games for me, well apart from driving games but I have always sucked at driving games!!
The only improved D-pad I've heard of was on a limited European edition (so limited I've never even seen one) and supposedly it didn't do much.
Agreed! Eh... More a 3rd place for me. Good for 3D but still has a trash d-pad. Not sure at the moment what I would favor as my 2nd favorite pad though.
I would be one of those fans. Aside from the analogue stick wearing out, I found the controller to be extremely comfortable when a rumble pak was added (the weight felt much better). That being said, I also quite like the Gamecube controller, so maybe i just have odd tastes. As for as my FAVORITE, I'd go with the offical Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Six-Button controller. I know it's very close to the Saturn pad, but for some reason it just feels better to me. The 360 controller would be a close 2nd. Initially I actually preferred the wired variant as the battery pack placement annoyed me, but I've gotten used to it.
For fighting games, Saturn's JPN pad For everything else, Dreamcast/Xbox S/X360 controller (they're all similar) "Dad?"
The SNES pads are really great, but somehow they feel small and light in my hands now. The pads I like best must be the Neo Geo CD pads. They wear out really fast, but after a good cleaning I think those are the best there are.
My favorite is the Gamecube Wavebird. Second favorite is the Hori N64 controller. Third would be the 360 controller.
I really like the Street Fighter II 15th anniversary pads for the PS2 -though they are quite similar to the JP Saturn pad. I also really like the Wii classic controller - maybe because I grew up with the SNES. I have those ASCII SNES pads Assembler recommends and I can tell you they are very, very good, and also, they are in perfect working order after almost twenty years.
