    Hi Forum.
I was just wondering what the best CRT for gaming is, that supports 50/60hz, RGB scart.
From what ive read, the sony trinitron is the best, but it lacks any rob scart input sadly.
I live in London (pal), what would be the best tv to go for?

Since you're in Europe that is largely a matter of taste, how big you are willing to go before breaking your back and whatever has a SCART input.

There really is no "best". This idea is a fallacy when it comes to items not made by companies like Apple. Flagship maybe but with CRTs you really have to see them in person due to age.

I have a 4:3 Trinitron from 1994 and it has RGB scart input, RF, Composite and S-Video input, works fine in 50/60hz, also has left + right speaker outputs in the back and a 3.5mm headphone jack at the front also has great sound and picture is top notch i love the thing, it's a heavy beast though. i'd assume most Trinitrons would have at least 1 RGB SCART input. unless it's dirt old, i'd also recommend Hitachi, JVC and Sharpe TVs from the same era

the model of my Trinitron is: KV-X2572U

My 21" Trinitron is also RGB scart...

Have a look at Panasonic too. These old sets come up on ebay quite frequently and being in London you're bound to find one within a reasonable distance to collect.

i'd also recommend checking out the freebee sites like freecycle thats where i got my Trinitron from, people just want rid of these TVs also sometimes charity shops have them, also make sure you get one with it's remote included < very handy

    Aight, aight, aight.

Ive decided I'm going to go for a sony pvm. It literally has all my wanted specs,
All i'll need is Female RGB SCART to BNC adapter breakout cable And a snes rgb cable with raw sync? or sync on luma? I'm not sure which one would be the one to get. any ideas?

I have a Sony PVM and use a very similar solution. Raw sync probably isn't needed. Feeding it composite video should be fine, I believe it has the circuitry inside to deal with extracting the sync signal. Though all PVM models aren't the same so I can't say for 100% certain that it is true.

if it doesn't a little sync stripper circuit should be enough lm1881 ic and a few caps / resistors scart cable should provide for it too that's if the OP can solder or get someone to so it or just buy a ready made solution :)

The most accurate thing you can say is "don't be surprised if it doesn't work" - the PVM is a professional monitor and is designed for broadcast signal levels. In the case of the external sync, that's 4V p-p - if you feed composite video into that socket, then the sync portion of the signal is about 300mV p-p - I.E. about 11dB below the level the monitor was intended to work with.

In my experience, Sony monitors are fairly tolerant about the sorts of signals you feed them, but that's way out of spec...

The reason I say so is because I have a Sony PVM myself, and it takes Composite Video just fine for Sync. But we can't know how every single model of PVM is designed. I would imagine more than the model I have are capable of doing the same. To be safe the cable that strips sync from composite video would be the way to go with Euro SCART cables.

My PVM refuses to use composite sync so I have a sync stripper.

Sorry to post again, but would a Sony PVM-20L4 accept this signal.

Ps1/2 with an rgb scart cable with the sync on Luma -> Female RGB SCART to BNC adapter breakout cable -> sony pvm

Apparantly sync on luma = greater picture and audio quality than composite sync in ps1/2 rgb cables.

    would that work?
sorry if this is a shit post, im only just learning the intricacies of audiovisual technologies.

never seen one wired up that way before, there's normally no luma / chroma etc wired up in a RGB scart cable i don't even know if RGB Scart supports sync anywhere else other than C-video / C-sync for RGB singals
unless im missunderstanding what you want to do the PS1/2 RGB cable would need to be custom wired

Get a PVM with SCART input, then. They're usually large and heavy, though. Otherwise, you'd have issues with sync on green PVMs and those that use the CMPTR port, and sometimes you'd need a sync separator. It's probably one of the better options, though - as long as the monitor hasn't been worn out in a studio.

Oh, and it's a load of crap that "Trinitron" televisions don't have RGB SCART. Sony made Trinitron-badged televisions since the Sixties, so naturally some don't have SCART. The original patent expired in the mid-Nineties, then they made the flat screen FD Trinitrons, and those finished about ten years later. Most televisions (larger than "portable" size) in the UK since the mid-Nineties had at least one RGB SCART socket. Saying Trinitrons don't have RGB SCART would be like getting in one Ford Escort, seeing it's a manual gearbox, and saying that Escorts didn't have automatic gearboxes.

I use a 29" Triniton CRT, with two RGB SCART inputs, composite and RF. Views and sounds incredible. Also works perfect with NTSC and PAL composite signals.

    I'd have to agree

cant beat the old SONY Trinitron TVs

if you can find a working one

look for the one that when you change channels the channel number is in the right top corner in green
