Best Dreamcast Imports

Hey guys!

I need help to purchase some japanese dreamcast titles.

what are the best ones?

I'm quite fond of Frame Gride, a pulse-pounding robot battler that's more complex than it looks. You don't need a lot of language skills to enjoy it, and even if you don't have a grip on katakana you can get by with a walkthrough. It also has historical relevance, as an English-language port was completed but the developer refused to license the port unless the network play options were included. You can guess how that fight ended.

If you do have the language skills, Dreamstud!o is an excellent construction kit game. A limited 3D graphics engine on top of a complex scripting language gives you the ability to make some nice adventure and RPG games from the ground up. You might also want to get the JPN-region version of Shenmue 2, if for no other reason than to get that one character portrayed with the correct gender. And of course, no import Dreamcast collection is complete without House of the Dead 2 and the accompanying JPN-only light gun.

The Dreamcast gun wasn't released in USA-EUROPE?????? :O

 

I saw the gun was released in europe... but maybe not the "light gun"=??

 

There are a rack of Dreamcast guns in my local Gamestation that prove otherwise.

And what contains the limited edition??

well, i have the american version of Shenmue LE. It has four discs. Two for the game. Shenmue Passport and OST cd. I haven't played the game yet...

 

About Shenmue 2... In Japan, the character of Yuan was a stereotypical flamboyant homosexual, and it was implied that he and Dou Niu were lovers. In the American Xbox version, the gender of Yuan was changed so that the character was portrayed as a woman with oddly masculine features. And although the European version was subtitled and not dubbed, all of the relevant dialogue was re-recorded with a female voice actor in order to maintain the pretense that Yuan was female and not male. Therefore, the Japanese Dreamcast release of Shenmue 2 is the only version where Yuan is portrayed as male. The sociological implication is that Americans (and Europeans) aren't prepared for unflattering portrayals of gay men in their games.

About the Dreamcast light gun? The first-party gun was not released in the United States, and in fact the software detects that gun and prevents it from being used. Other manufacturers were free to release their own compatible light guns, but none of these match the high quality of the real Sega hardware. I'm not sure what the situation with the light gun was in Europe.

In europe the light gun was released officially by SEGA.

 

It also has the VF Passport... this was right before AM2 put out Virtua Fighter Four. I happen to have one for sale if anyone be interested.
