Remarkably, I have just come into possession of my first PS2 ever, a 70001 slim.

I'm going to try and pick up a copy of Agent Under Fire today, and I've figured out the sensor mods, I was just wondering if anyone here could recommend a well-written FMB tutorial?
There seems to be no shortage of tuts out there, but many seem to have been written by people for whom English is a second language, and I have no patience for Youtube.

I can't give you a tutorial, but I can give you a tip. Be sure to use FMCB V1.9.4 and not 1.8. If you use the newest version you can just put the memory card in any PS2 and it will be softmodded, no need to install it again specially for that console.

Not true. I have v1.8 which I just installed and tested yesterday for the first time. The memory card works for all Ps2 (fat and slim) that I tried.

There are two options with v!.8 one is the basic install only for that system that you are using and the other option covers all Ps2s in that region.

I must say many of the online tutorials have issues because they assume things or skip steps. It is frustrating when it does not work because you are unsure which step it is that you screwed up.

The first several steps can be done in any order. If a guide skips one of these steps be sure to include it.

    1. You have to mod your system so you can do a disc swap. What they don't tell you is that even after you do this you have to swap discs fast or it won't work

    2. Then Burn an ISO of Agent Under Fire. You then modify the file and save this modified file it to a disc.

    3. You will then download Mcboot software for your flashdrive.

    4. Boot up the retail disc of Agent Under Fire and play till level 2. Save the game. Use a sony brand PS2 memory card.

With these steps completed you are ready to do it.

    1. Boot the retail game
    2. Load saved game.
    3. At this point put in the flash drive
    4. Disc swap with modified Agent Under Fire.
    5. Load second level

    This brings up LaunchELF screen.
    1. Hit circle for Browser
    2. Go to the flash drive and hit circle again.
    3. Highlight the Free Mcboot.ELF file on your flash drive and you are done.

In the end this page helped me finish the process.

Oh, is that true ? I think it's only like that if you have the exact same model number ( if you have a 70001, FMCB 1.8 will only work on a 70001, but if you have 1.94, it will work on any system.)
If that's not correct, then I'm sorry, I just thought that it was like that all this time.

I know it is true. I took it from my slim and used it on a fat model and then several others.

The first selection is "normal install" which is only for the model you are using. The second "multi version install" works on all models.

Is your console fitted with a mod chip?
There are a few methods to get to the FMCB installer, game save exploit, swap magic disc, hot swap and mod chip.
once you are in the installer is stupid simple, I have a FMCB tutorial in my YouTube thread. It's for the PSX, just follow up till the end of the the first stage (installing on a ps2)..

i dont know why anyone would even want to use 1.8, 1.94 is less buggy and supports more features..

When you install it you will have the option to have it work only on that PS2 or on any.

Thanks to all who replied, my PS2 is now FMCBed. I ran a backup on it last night, Katamari Damacy. First time I burned it using IMGBurn @ 4x ESR couldn't boot it, but then I tried again, same ISO but using Alcohol 120% with the PS2 settings applied @ 2x it worked perfectly, music and everything. I guess the PS2 laser is fussy (or my IMGBurn install with the Dreamcast patch doesn't work with PS2).

If your media says it's for 8X, do yourself a FAVOR and burn it using the RECOMMENDED SETTINGS. Don't go by instructions which were supposed to be used 20 years ago for burning PS1 CDs with the media and burners that existed at the time.

Same advice apply to modern CDRs. Burning modern discs at slow speeds will actually make coasters instead of giving you better results.

I always use ImgBurn. I set the minimum speed for a particular disk, for example, for Verbatim DVD-R minimum speed is 6. And never no problems.

That's strange, I always use Verbatim AZO DVD-R, and my IMGBurn install lets me choose 2x, 4x or 8x, no 6x option.

I'm going to try burning Devil May Cry using Toast Titanium (I do most stuff on Mac, so it's just more convenient if that works).

ImgBurn allows you to set any speed, but not the fact that he will use it. I usually look at the properties supported by the speed disk (in the right window), and then manually put the minimum supported speed disk

It also depends on the CD/DVD writer.

l_Oliveira is right. Burning at too low speeds might even worsen the quality of the burns. If your discs and writer are both decent, please don't waste time by sticking with such primitive speeds. Only crap writers and/or discs will need that.

The BEST burn speed depends on the disc you're going to burn *COMBINED* with your burner. That's why a lot of burning programs (including IMGBURN) have measurement/analysis tools for burning speed/quality/performance.

For ANY SOLID conclusions about the quality of your media/recorder combo you need to profile and see the said graphs. I don't think any average pirate bothers with that. They just read 20 year old PS1 burning guides and then go to forums when they're done going through 10 to 20 coasters (depending on each one's patience/willingness to waste money).

On some cases it's even cheaper to procure the games in their original discs than waste time learning how to pirate them ... lol

Instead of making such a hurtful comment, why not make a bug report? I am always listening...

But you must actually describe what is wrong.

Besides, it has worked for thousands of users out there. So this means that you either did something wrong or it is an elusive bug that only occurs under specific conditions.

Don't let some random "someguy1" discourage you, man. :) The "you did something wrong" part is highlighted for sure.
