Brave Fencer Musashi. (Or as I liked to call it, poor man's Zelda.) I can't fully recall, but I vaguely recall Fear Effect was sort of cheating (pre-rendered something-er-other.) Maybe I'm mistaken.
Personally, I don't consider pre-rendered as "cheating." Whatever the developer has to do to achieve their art style, then that's fine by me. As long as it looks good! I wish someone would have tried pre-rendered backdrops on current-gen consoles (soon to be last gen). No doubt they could produce a game that looks nearly photo realistic.
1080p pre-rendering in a classic Resident Evil/Parasite Eve/Onimusha game would be incredible. That style of game play still has a lot to offer and it's criminal that it's died out.
hated ridge racer type 4, it was just "blergh" for me. but on topic, i think they done well with Metal Gear Solid
I haven't played all of the games people have mentioned, so I don't know how it compares to those, but as far as 3D rendering the best game I've seen is Crash Bandicoot: Warped. I don't enjoy it as much as 2, but it's still a great game, and it has some really impressive graphics for a PlayStation game. Tobal also has some pretty impressive graphics, except it plays like shit.
The plot was odd and most people didnt like it but FF8 had some pretty graphics and fmv for a ps1 game
I concur, I believe "blergh" does indeed mean he does not look at the game in a favourable light, and that he probably has no wish to play it again.
The Crash series were insane, go read the docs at NaughtyDog about how they it Talk about pushing the hardware...
Ridge Racer 4 is probably my favourite in terms of graphics and art direction. Absolutely love the different shades used particularly at sunset on Wonderhill and the concrete palette of Out of Blue. The city lights of Brightest Nite also, probably the most attractive game on the system. Gran Turismo 2 takes the crown though. Not sure about cel-shaded PSX games but Sheep Dog 'n' Wolf was also a looker.
