If you don't know who Gumpei Yokoi is then you really should take a look..

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunpei_Yokoi

The man is brilliant. So anyway...I was just wondering for people familiar with him...what's your favourite thing that he was involved in making?

For me.....it would have to be super metroid. Best super famicom purchase by FAR.

Second place goes to the gameboy
and third goes to the d-pad

I really like the Wonderswan hardware, the screen was good, and it ran off a single AA battery. It was a nice peice of kit :love2:
I think I have a Gunpey edition pack sitting around somewhere.

Virtual Boy. It's his best and his worst creation.

I'm not sure it did in its released form. It's all kinds of wrong: a non-portable portable, easily broken stand, extremely poor ergonomics, a screen that gives many people headaches after a short amount of play... it should never have been released. I'm kind of glad it was, as a curio it's fantastic, but as a device for gaming it's pretty poorly thought out.

Gameboy would be Yokoi's biggest achievement, anyway. Not sure what project of his I'd put as my favourite, but I do have a fondness for Super Mario Land. I have a copy of Super Metroid sitting here awaiting a CR2032 so it won't lose my save again...

I have to go with the D-Pad as well with Metroid/Kid Icarus as close runners up.

I rented a virtual boy when it was new. One thing that bugged me is it cut off vision and sound. So I wasn't able to chat with friends while playing. To me gaming is a social activity, so take that aspect away, and then I don't find it fun anymore.

If you look up on the history of Nintendo R&D1 and Yokoi-san, you'll see how badly they were treated and how sad a story his time for that company was.

GB, then metroid, Then maybe wonderswan (nice concept).

I wish the man was still alive. I think we would have gotten something pretty amazing from him by now.

    In Memory of Toy & Game Inventor Gunpei Yokoi-san 1941 - 1997

As far as i'm concerned, Yokoi-san( with Miyamoto-san ) ressurrected the gaming industry in the West.

Gameboy would HAVE TO be my favorite Yokoi-san creation.
Just look at the achievements made eversince the Game & Watch.
Out of all of my portables ( including DS Lite & PSP ) -
Gameboy Micro IS my favorite. I'm fascinated by the size and
screen quality ! And you don't feel like an oddball with a HUGE gadget
in your hands while you're out in public. I buy the "worthy" official
GBA games but then I go into forbidden terroritory and throw rest of
the crappy titles onto a flash cart  Meh, I don't bother with cellphone
    games.

    Honorable mentions
    -------------------

D-Pad - Arcade sticks are great but not everything was meant for stick.

Super Metroid - Just WOW when it finally released.

Virtual Boy - Depite the "red" and physical design I saw great games coming. Maybe if VB did survive Yokoi-san may have found a clever / cheaper color VR mechanism. Maybe i'm way off on this one - lol

It was a blessing to have met my childhood hero
