My favorite creation of his was Super Metroid. Top notch game all around. But he created alot of very cool things. It's sad that we lost him, and that Nintendo effectively kicked him out of the club after Virtual Boy not being a huge success. I remember seeing an episode about him on "Game Makers" on G4 which was pretty neat. Herman, very cool video. And it must have been quite a thrill to have met him for you. Also I only ever played the Virtual Boy briefly once in a toy store. I wanted it but the price was too much and then it collapsed and I really wasn't aware when that was but if I had been I would have bought one then as they lowered the price on them down to as low at 20$ I heard.
From a practical point...it has to be the game-boy, the technology / portability and the fact id had "THE" killer ap that guaranteed its sales From a heart point of view.....the Virtual Boy......I just think it is such a different machine and still really no other 3d console around. Alright 3d master system and snes with glasses......but this could be used by anyone. Gaming a social pasttime.....yes but do you like to have your mates sit watching you play your PSP......don`t think so................so hand helds are really for individual play. Therefore I think the VB is just in a different league. Shame it didn`t take off as link play could have been great and 3rd & 4th gen games may have really made this system a great rather than a puzzle in most peoples minds
one funny thing is, when i was playing those G&Ws in the early 80s, i once had that brain wave of a kind alterable LCD-screen, which would allow you to play more than just one specific game per device. basically it was the idea behind the gameboy. i was about 8years old then.
You mean like the er MB Microvision... which predated the G&W series... I think the 70s Nintendo Toy that Gunpei designed were the best things he ever done, things like Duck Hunt, Wild Gunman and Love Tester.
70s? 80s?^^" yeah, like that MB Microvision, just with the difference, that i wasn't aware of its existence at that time and my foresee was more like G&W shaped (like the GBA), but with kinda thiny modules and colored overlays to put on.
gameboy really revolutionized things, I remember back in 1989 being totally blown out of my mind by how awesome of an idea it was. Too bad I found out about him after he died. He's me hero
