I have my eyes on a web site domain. It expires fall 2015.
It is just parked there doing nothing and in fact hasn't done anything in a long time but sit there.

Assuming it does expire as planned. Do I sit there like an ebay sniper waiting for that moment or is there a program to do this for me? Any ideas are welcome.

There still should be websites out there that will attempt to get it for you for a fee (cant recommend any specifically as its been a while). I tried it once or twice, didn't work but at least they tried hah.

Depending on the registrar or the regulating body for the tld there are differing rules.

for example I jumped on a particular domain that I liked, but had to wait a month to see the intentions of the original owner, also if it is a good domain the old registrar may get it straight after it's customer finished in order to try and resell at a premium ( say for 3 letter domains )

Assuming a name that has been parked for a long time and has apparently just been renewed will be dropped next year is a very poor assumption. Even if by some chance it happened there's almost no chance you would have a chance to register the name directly. It will probably go through the current registrars own auction process and then be tasted by a dozen others and be snapped up by another speculator long before you have a chance to register it. There are ways to join that earlier queue but they're probably not an option for you if you're expecting to pay regfee for a dropped name.

Yeah, it will be renewed. And if you ever ask about it, they'll offer for very cheap, like 50,000 USD.

I would just keep checking the whois and see if the domain goes into pending deletion. If it does then you might want to check out godaddy domain backorder. It will pick the domain up when it becomes instantly free. I picked up dansprojects.com this way; after 3 years of waiting.

Stay away from Godaddy completely. Bunch of rip-off merchants. Those domain renewal services are a con. Ask your registrar to try and register it for you once it's in pending deletion.

you can't register a domain while its in pending deletion.

The godaddy backorder service does cost a fee and is setup as a subscription. If you read the fine print and cancel your subscription then there are no extra costs. No sure why you have had problems with it. It worked perfectly for me.

Because it's a rip-off - they charge you for something you can do yourself for free. There is NO GUARANTEE.

Like I said, pending deletion means the registrant can't get it back and you'll be able to either register it or have to bid on it within 5 days. So, rather than trying to register it, ask your registrar for help. If they're any good, they'll help - they will have the same facilities available to them as Godaddy. Auctions tend to be places like Pool and Snapnames. They actually do domain backordering too - and they have more registrants under them so THEY have more chance than Godaddy. And they don't charge you a non-refundable fee up-front.

If you use a service provided by the registrar that that holds a dropping name you have an advantage. The name will never drop and will go to the highest bidder on that service. No point doing this until the domain at least enters redemption period though.
