Thompson are the worst. Philips drive are mostly in the middle, with the later ones being just as good as the Samsung. Samsung drives dropped off a bit towards the end.

If it's a choice between Thompson and Ebola, I'd take Ebola.

A 360 drive won't work, it's SATA and has a different power connector as well.

sata isnt a problem... and neither is the power connector really..

just wondering if the FW is compatible seeing as it can read xbox discs (8080) and is simmilar to keron drives in that regard

Only ever seen 1 Hitachi drive and my reaction was simply "huh, fancy that".

My issue with declaring the Hitachi is the rareness which means it really wasn't tested as much or as long

Hitachi is by far the best drive but it has a "big letdown" if you want to use CD-Rs in it ...
There's code in it's firmware which make the CD laser be intentionally underpowered (to prevent people using pirated music CDs with the rip feature).

The Thompson garbage has code in it's firmware to check discs for recordable woobles and if it finds any it would just open the tray, no questions made. Also it used the same RED laser to read both CDs and DVDs(it had no infra red led for CDs).

I think the early Samsung/Toshiba drives had no CD-R checks on the firmware or hacked firmware was released which bypassed that. (not sure what was like) But I am sure it could read CD-Rs just fine after some rework.

For the Hitachi/LG drive a clever hack with a resistor pumps back the laser power to reasonable levels making CD-Rs work again.

It was about placing a 100-1000 ohm resistor (1K is what I used on my drive) from a circular test point marked "VRCD" to any GND point through the said resistor in the drive PCB.

Leave a disc inside. It will stop sticking. You can leave one of those blank transparent discs that come on the edges of CD/DVD towers. It's just to make sure the spindle won't stick on the magnet at the drive top.

Yeah I may do that, I just gave it a wash in some nice hit water :) I also boiled the drive belt as it was really loose and malformed.

any links to the cdr mod with the resistor ^^

    What's the minimum I can use I don't have any 1k's :( I've got
    2k
    560 ohm
    300 ohm
    150 ohm

    i guess I could chain 3x300ohm and a 150 ohm to give 1050 ohms..

    and that's about it..
