I agree with Bushnell for the most part.. I'm sure there are a few others here that would as well. Although we may be in the minority.
That spirit gets crushed out of someone when they have to deal with camera angles for a year and a half. Most gamers I know who became programmers barely game anymore.
I remember reading in a newspaper that the guy who created Katamari Damacy (can't remember his name) never played a videogame in his life, or something like that.
I can relate. The day I began diving into how games are made, electronics, corporate structure and all the behind-the-scenes stuff, was the day I started gaming less and less. The magic is marginally less when you know what moves the puppets. Ignorance is bliss indeed. I find myself analyzing games for visual techniques, logical triggers and other "how-to" mechanisms when I play them, instead of enjoying the ride. Once you are a puppeteer yourself puppet-shows don't feel the same.
So wait if the playstation museum has a copy of it... why not begin negotiations with them. Or is the guy a real horder... Today they even put up a review. http://www.playstationmuseum.com/Games/BETA/BTA-076.htm I admit that watching that footage and reading through this has made me even more crazy about this... I hope there's some way to recover it.
I'm trying to contact him now, if anyone has his AIM or MSN or something else that would be great. Hes Benedict_Arnold on the boards if it wasnt obvious, but he hasnt visited in over a year. I'm trying to see if I can get this with a small group of people, but if that fails I already spoke with Kev and he approved a 0bit deal. So if someone here knows him can you please have him contact me? I'm sure we can work something out that is beneficial to him. dot50cal(at)gmail There are signs that he doesn't own it however, if you notice on his other reviews their status is listed as "Preserved". 1.5 has no status indicator. Also, There are some inconsistencies about the game in his text which seem to indicate he either didnt have much time with the game or played it at all.
If this slips through the communities fingers it might become a little infamous..such a famous beta sold for a sum poulty to what the Sonic Extreme test was sold for... This sucks. But hey on the subject of game developers losing the will to game I know down here in Australia the dev houses tend to have consoles and the devs (programmers to art) mess around with different games and still enjoy them..all hope is not lost on that regard. I think a big part would come from what company you get stuck working for.
Do you know if the owner has spoken about what he would like to do with it and all? If not, maybe it's just best to wait until then, after all maybe he would like to release it and so might save you some money.
Wow I cant believe someone bought it gor only $300, I would have even paid that. I hope it somehow gets out. As someone above said if this one doesnt get released it will become even more infamous.
This is just a thought, but if I owned something like Resident Evil 1.5 I sure as hell would not make it known to the general public.
Well its a bit late for that now, isnt it? He obviously had access or at least knows someone who owns it.
now now children, there's no use crying over spilled milk. I m sure we can find a solution eventually =)
No contact, so I suppose this is dead until he makes a move. Though I doubt it, it seems more like someone in the community bought this via kev's lost deal and let him have a chance to review it for the site. If that someone is reading this, confidentiality is guaranteed if you ever would like to release it, or fund a release through the site or through myself personally.
We can now safely conclude that the 75-80% figure was correct, but only for the PS version - the Saturn prototype didn't get much further than the basic "alpha" stage of development, and incredibly few today know this would have been a separate game to the PS code trading hands for a ridiculously low amount recently. From what I've been able to figure out, it would have featured the same locations (though without using any form of memory upgrade, as often rumoured) seen through the eyes of new players. One of these was described as a photographer or journalist, and based on Capcom's track record of recycling leftover ideas from previous installments there is a good chance the similar character in the Outbreak spin-offs originated from this aborted build.
Definetly a sad turn of events. A release of this would have coincided nicely with Halloween coming up.
