The cable from the actual box to the controller -- mine broke. I could probably find the right parts to make another on in Akihabara, but I don't have that luxury now. In Honolulu? Shit... all we have here is radio shack. Seeing as how Sigma (if they even exist anymore) don't retail stuff themselves, it's a pain in the ass, yet possible to get any of those parts you might need. They'd still require less time/hassle than making them w/ resources here, which was my point initially.

Or a broken controller cable. Remember, it's a custom stick -- not a Sega Saturn pad.

Again... all great theory, but Hawaii is very much an "island". I'm sure there's a nick-nack store SOMEWHERE... but in all honesty, I'd rather be at the beach than fucking around looking for wires (in stores, or online for that matter).

Guess I was just REAAAALY unlucky then. I actually do have a stash of Sanwa buttons sitting around here I could use if the stick ever went out.

I well know where Datel is from, but I don't think anyone can claim the first test rig, all I know is that they weren't popular and weren't exported until the Super Gun came around. Because I know a large deal of them were exported to UK, it would seem strange that a an expensive (nearly $1k) + ($1500+ Street Fighter 2) Chinese product (which had to be bought from a shady Chinese trader) would be so heavily imported to UK while Datel was making them at home.

I believe that the most likely to be broken part is the JAMMA connector... presuming it's on extention (which all REAL units have) not just a edge connector screwed into the side of the case

They had them here, large test rigs, however supergun was probably the first to be small enough to be considered for home use. I remember there was a column done on them in EGM.

Datel called their unit a Supergun, tho the pictures in the ad were actually drawn pictures, not photographs. Had a flurescent logo saying "SUPERGUN" on it, circa 1994 I guess for that one.

I've never seen the unit in real life, the pictures displayed it as rather compact tho.

I think the term Supergun is acceptable, not correct perhaps but it carries the same connotations that many are aware of.

So maybe it wasn't even released? I'm interested, if Datel made one it would be probably the most professional western one.

Err, did you not see where I said that Gavindo owned one?

There's a very slight possibility he might know who still has it and then I'd be able to take photos.

The thing I was saying is that the Datel was the first one I recall hearing of in the UK released to the public.

Datel are of course known to license out their technology (or maybe even borrow it!!) in other countries. Wonder if they did here?

Who is Gavindo? You didn't mention that or anyone owning one.

    Didn't i? ;)

    *edit*

GaijinPunch, I'm going by Tonk's fuzzy pic here:

    (thanks for the pic, Tonk!)

I don't know what model you have, or what the ports on the others look like. From the pic I've seen of the AV7000, it appears the same.

That appears to me to be a standard 8 pin (maybe 9 pin it is unclear) DIN socket. Not mini DIN - that is like a PS/2 keyboard port, which is a smaller version of the DIN socket.

Check out this page. Does that look like your socket?

At 35 cents, I think that would be cheaper than Sigma, if they were still around. The other end is the same price (OK that's bulk, but still under a dollar) so you could fix the joystick lead.

Incidentally, all that joystick lead is is a multicore cable with a connector on it. The wires are soldered to the connector that end, and soldered to a PCB or direct to the controls on the other. It is a simple repair should you have the misfortune to break it ;) Oh, and DIN sockets rarely break, it would be the plug on the joystick.

Yeah, it's one of those two (probably the one on the left). BUT, now that I think back, it was actually video cable that was busted. I got shitty picture, and only sound on one side. No bother really, as it's the same connector. In all honsety though, I was sure it was the box... and was really glad to only pay 1000 yen to find out it was just a cable. In such a situation, I'd rather buy a part I know works and swap it out. Besides, gave me a chance to get an S-Video connection, and have the guy explain how to monkey-rig it. Requires video from the RGB side, and sound fromt he TV side, but with the yellow and white cables. WTF?)

Now that I have a confirmed broken one, I can rip it open and figure out how it's wired, but at the time, I didn't know that it was the cord, and I didn't know exactly how to wire it. While I'm persistent, I'm not the most handy guy with hardware. Could I have figured it out? Yeah, eventually. Not to sound to snooty, but if it took me an hour of walking through Akiba finding the parts and an hour of tinkering to wire it. 2 hours vs 1000 yen (or even 2000 yen... or even 1 hours vs 2000 yen)... I made more than 2000 yen an hour, and didn't have near enough to time to the stuff I wanted.

This is the same logic I used when I quit buying parts in Akiba and making computers...for myself, or friends. Yeah, you get a better price, and you can get what you want, but the hours it takes to find the best price, and even worse, carrying it home (no car)... screw dat, I thought.

  11. Are those wires TAPED to that connector in the picture retro posted?

Probably taped over the solder points to prevent shorting.

I must be blind. What color and where?

  16. Err... well, it looked green, but now that you show the picture of that plug, I guess it was just the part with no wires/printing that looked like a strip of green masking tape of some sort.

Assembler, MAS is right up the street from me so let me know if you want me to bust their balls for you. Also I just got my 8 button Saturn Nova stick configured for Street Fighter on Fri.
Very well made and yes a lot of options when you call them as I said in another thread that Retro told me to suck it up on :D
Im still looking for the Virtua stick from Japan so if you want to trade for it I will do it, I paid 117.00 for the Nova Mas stick with Black sides and Black Face so it would be a good trade. Also yes she will answer the phone in the AM from home and she goes into the shop at around noon.

I wonder, don't you ever get bored of the beach, living so close?

Yeah, no tape - that's the lacquer of the PCB in the middle ;)

And my bad - that pic shows the video connector not the joystick... but I figured that it was the same from the round hole on the AV7000 ;)

And sure - lots of people figure that, and 1000 Yen isn't much to pay for a wire.

Anti: Actually, I've not been to the beach that much lately. I re-hurt my shoulder at the gym (originally surfing) a few days ago, and there's no way I can swim. I can barely jog... no weights. I have been doing some reading by the pool the last few days though.

Retro: The AV7000 doesn't have the cool black design unfortunately, but is for the most part the same. It's a nice box. The only thing weird is if you want to use S-Video. I really would've never figured it out.

I can post better pics if anyone wants to see them. The stick is pretty damn good too, although I like a slightly thicker base.
