I sent my 30GB iPod Video back to Apple twice because the clickwheel didn't click, every time the bastards sent it back exactly as is (but scratched to shit) because their software tests didn't detect anything wrong with the software all they had to fucking do was click the fucking wheel and they would see and feel it was fucked, but they didn't. So I sold it to some schmuck who bought it completely aware of the problems just because it was an iPod. More fool him, and fuck Apple's quality testing. Incidentally, I am typing this on my MacBook (Intel) which refuses to reboot or install any system updates if it has been powered on (inc in standby) for more than 24 hours.
Apple's been screwing up a lot lately. Their computers and software from 2 years ago were rock solid. I never have problems with my iPod like other people seem to get, though. And I'm really rough with it.
All things considered, I'm actually surprised my iPod still works. A lot of my friends have had theirs break through the years, but mine is close to two years old and still going. I recently dropped it on the bus while it was playing, but no harm done. I seem to have a love/hate relationship with my iPod. It carries most of my music so I can listen to it anywhere, but I hate the fact that I have to baby it lest I scratch its feather-soft shell (or did, before I bought a case). It's like Apple designs the iPod so you're forced to buy a case, unless you like your expensive electronic equipment to look like it's been through a meat grinder. There are people who unconditionally love Apple, though, for whatever reason. More power to people who want to put exorbitant amounts of money on hardware that does exactly what the competition does. The only difference is that the competition doesn't market to the teenage hipster group and doesn't (for the most part) manufacture casing that looks like it was designed to show you your reflection. I have nothing against those who like Apple, but I never will. They're overpriced, have a "form over function" design policy, and are often used by people who know next to nothing about computers or electronics in general. Cool.
Again, with Sharepod, you won't have those problems. The damn software is so good, that you run it through the ipod itself, so you can use in ANY computer. Did i mentioned it very light on hardware, small and easy to use? http://www.getsharepod.com/ PS: I don't have an Ipod, but my Brother always kept me asking him to find a decent replacement for itunes. When i found this, even i wanted an ipod for myself. (Still i'm happy with my cellphone with 4g memory stick)
I think the iPods have gotten better, especially this gen. However, I have seen way too many of them break. For the price, that sucks. With my luck, that shit would die after a year. I use my player everyday, so that would suck.
Here's how to get the most out of your iPod: 1: Don't buy music from iTunes. I've heard they've removed DRM, but I don't know that for sure. I buy from emusic. It's all MP3 w/ none of that bullshit. 2: Don't rip your music with iTunes... use another tool. There are tons of them. iTunes by default will DRM-ify your tunes (anyway around this?) 3: Don't use iTunes: A: Use Winamp (for Windows users). It's a less-bloated piece of shit. It's much crisper than iTunes (Which doesn't say much). The interface is a million times better. B: Use Amarok (for Linux users). Although mounting your iPod automatically can be a bit tricky. I've learned to live with it 4: Don't watch video on it. Mod a PSP for that. It will hurt your head anyway... at least it does mine. Screen is too small. I tried a Creative Zen a while ago but the navigation on it was bullshit. I think when I upgrade I might try a Zune, but it'll be a while. I've got 30GB full on my 60GB. I'm somewhat picky about what goes on there. I listen to independent labels mainly, so it take some work to find the stuff I will listen to over and over again.
Just adding to this... 1: No CD's? :110: 2. EAC + LAME is awesome for ripping. 3: I've found another good player is Foobar2000. I just started using it. Winamp is pretty sweet, though.
Foobar2000 is everything a music player should be and nothing more. I will say that using it with the iPod plugin borked my CD covers on almost every song I had up there, but that's what I get for using an unstable, lightly-tested plugin.
Still, giving an advice (in this case a better solution for organizing the music on his ipod) isn't something bad, don't you think?
Can you turn off crashing in iTunes? His complaints about converting video are completely valid. I don't know exactly what kinds of videos iTunes allows you to convert, but it sure as hell wasn't any of the dozen or so videos I tried. I had to use third-party software, which did a damn good job. Another iPod complaint that's already been covered: watching videos on an iPod Video sucks. A migraine is a very possible outcome of watching a movie on a screen that small.
Well I use to have the 1 gig ipod nano, but I never used it to much, traded it in and got a DS instead, best move ever. And on the plus side my DS can play MP3's just fine.
Itunes has never crashed for me. I use it just for music though. I use my PSP for viewing movies, if I have some for it. I did put some pictures on my Ipod but I deleted them, mainly because the screen was so small, and the folder it created on my PC was BIG.
I can't recall it crashing on me recently (again, I don't use it anymore, so "recently" would be sometime last year). Considering how much RAM it uses and how many processes it has running at any one time, though, I wouldn't be surprised if it did crash somewhat frequently. I remember it being very slow for me, though...
I have 1.5 gigs of RAM and my PC seldom slows down, even with lots of Firefox windows open and Itunes running. Usually games and a few graphics program cause my PC to slow down.
Last year, Microsoft fucked the Zune software up pretty bad. It used to be a skinned WMP, now it's so simplified, nothing is left. All I use it for is transferring though. Who the hell actually uses that stuff for watching movies/listening to music anyway? I miss My Computer>MP3 Player>drag and drop. Though, I guess with Zune and iTunes, it's open program, drag and drop, but whatever.
I was just talking about iTunes, not my computer as a whole. I haven't actually used enough programs at once to slow this computer down (unless you start bringing programs such as Crysis into the equation).
if you go back, you'll see that i had bolded what was not an actual itunes issues. as for crashing - i've never had it crash. I have 1GB of ram and a 1.80GHz CPU... and i'm usually running it with firefox. I had winamp crashALL the time though.
Yes, but you didn't address the issues that actually do exist in the software. Winamp is also something I avoid. Large disclaimer as well; what may crash for one person may not crash for another. It depends on any number of differences in hardware/software/etc. This probably should have been said much earlier.
