I wish EAC -> LAME @ -V 1(or 2 or 3) --vbr-new would become an internet standard... If I'm buying small/local bands music the least they could do is provide it at a decent quality... there's just no reason for poorly encoded 128Kbit files to be out there anymore. ~Krelian
That is, unless it's something rare and out-of-print. There have been a few bands I haven't had the opportunity to download or purchase. If it's an older encoding and there hasn't been a recent, better copy then I just take what I can get. 128kbps doesn't sound awful to my ears, but flac is still my favorite. I don't really like mp3, but it's the most common thing around so that's just what I wind up using..
If you mean flac, I agree. I don't download/encode with it often, just if the album is one of my favorites. Either way, it sounds excellent
I'm just having a problem with the video. I have a couple of Sopranos episodes but they can't be dragged and dropped into iTunes since it doesn't support .avi. I've also tried adding the files manually but after I choose them and hit "OK" nothing happens...the files are not imported. I tried using Moavi video converter and converting them to iPod format, but the sound doesn't work. I used QuickTime Pro and converted it to iPod and all it did was produce a white screen. I really can't understand why the iPod (or Apple for that matter) doesn't natively support .avi. I've spent hours trying to get around it, converting, etc, but so far no luck. The other issue is Napster To Go. Apple is just being a cocksucker by not allowing you to use that on their iPods. Ripping from CD or transferring regular MP3s from my hard drive works well, no real complaints there. I'm happy with the player itself. It feels like a nice piece of hardware and the price difference wasn't as much as I was expecting when compared to the non-Apple brands. In fact stepping up to the Sony Walkman or Toshiba models would actually be more expensive. I've always like Apple hardware, but I knew it was fickle. Anyway, I'm thinking about ditching it and going with a Creative Labs model, using it with napster, and loading .avi just by drag and drop. The only reason I haven't already done that is because I actually do like the design, size, and feel of the iPod.
I have 30g video model wich I use quite often, but the first thing I did was installing rockbox (more audio format support and to copy and organize my music as I want, copy-pasting my music directories in explorer) and a boot menu to access the regular ipod software from time to time, I tend to watch videos on it, not full movies but tv shows in the 30-40 minutes range, the converting thing is time consuming but I have found a decent working converter. I have completely disabled the Itunes update feature by the way, I just don't want it to mess with the ipod...
Yeah, that's the thing. QuickTime tells me that codecs are missing and points my browser to a page to download additional codecs, but the page has about a dozen codecs listed and it doesn't tell me which one I need specifically. I downloaded the divx codec before but after that my VLC media player said a codec was missing, which is par for the course with codecs. Things work right on the video players I use and I know once I start downloading more codecs I run the risk of having it never work right again. I rolled back the codec that I had installed for QuickTime and VLC started working again. I've learned that Nero isn't working now, and the only change I made was that iTunes takes over the CD-ROM when a new disc is inserted. It's like paying money for the iPod and QuickTime Pro wasn't enough, Apples still wants more.
I got a Vision M, cant fault its just got some decent earbuds and your away. Really don't like Apple stuff. Looks nice cant fault that but too expensive and to be honest the hollier-then-thou twatitude of of Apple piss me off.
I m a fan of standard interfaces and unified GUIs. I can't stand "Special" software that requires extra memoire on boot. I like simple - and Apple is only simple in design lately I m afraid.
@Japan-Games: Try using Videora to convert your video files. That's what I've always used and I've never had any problems.
I know that, but I was speaking of easy way. Not digging 3 layer of menu etc. Of corse if you are smart your ipod/iphone is not erase, but by default and in most basic case it will delete your content easily. BTW: I own an iPhone
Use nice and simply and working Xvid4PSP it can convert a wide range files to nearly any portable device on the market.
I was thinking of getting the new 32GB Touch, but rumors coming from mac sites say the 2G iPhone/Touch is just around the corner, and well is enough to know that 1 year from now apple is going to release the 3G, so I'm not buying something thats already old (nor cheap) Speaking of that, I wouldnt buy music nor any other content on itunes if I already had an ipod, basically becos is a known fact that apple subsidizes the online store with the ipod. Thats the reason why is more expensive that regular PMPs, becos you're technically paying for content you arent getting. The day apple sells the ipod at cost like console manufacturers do is the day all my songs and videos will be bought in the iTMS. Seriously? that sucks! pretty much anything on the market these days can play .avi, even phones... Amazing, they went X86 and they're still pulling that shit from the PPC days. My advise: if you want a mac assemble one yourself. Get a nice barebones, the best components, and a mac keyboard and mouse (even a screen if you want, those arent that overpriced) and there you go. You can get a powerhouse for the price of an iMac, and dont even ask me what you could get for the price of the MacPro.
