Indeed, you have to be willing to sink quite a bit of money into that hobby to establish a collection of note. Either that or save every single thing you ever find with the logo on it and hope in 5 years it becomes a collectable item... Well, the originals at least. The special editions are a lot less graceful in their portrayal of the aging of Star Wars - something akin to reanimating a dead corpse, dressing it up in a dapper three-piece suit, and trying to put the latest style into what's left of its hair. My prime reason for attempting to aquire a Laserdisk player - to enjoy the Holy Trilogy on a digital media format without the molestations of Lucas' retrospective meddling. :smt023
I don't think the new Trilogy is bad - they just added in some CG pieces, cleaned up the video and SFX (and added Jabba in IV)... I don't think that can be described as reanimating a "dead corpse" (sic)
That Jabba scene needs to be redone. The CG looks terrible compared to what can be done today. Isn't it ironic that the effects done in 1997 look more dated than the effects from 1976? Just a thought. Since we're talking about Star Wars, anyone see the episode III trailer yet?
Downloaded the Episode III trailer a while ago... I thought for the most part it looked interesting, although after the mediocrity of Episodes I and II, I'm not expecting anything out of the new movie. Still, II was better than I, so maybe this one will actually be about average. And yeah, it was all the CG touchups, added characters, explosions, sounds (the ultra-fake computer scream from the Cloud City battle, anyone?) that made the special editions suck so bad. They weren't done in a way that was remotely discreet, and as such only served to emphasize the fact that the movies were done over with a heavy dose of CG - very little of which, in my opinion, was needed or even made things better. The only worthwhile addition would be the deleted Biggs footage at the end of Star Wars. Then again, when your favorite movies as a small child were the unadulterated originals, you'd probably tend to notice changes a lot more. :smt043
