The recording layer used in the M-Disc requires a much more sensitive read channel than the one used for CDs. Sure, you could make a CD format disc using that recording technology, but drives designed to work with the sort of signal levels produced by CDs wouldn't be able to read it.
I'm not going to pretend I'm an expert with this but I remember reading about how video games are burned and the data is spread around in a specific way to make it easier to load levels, models, etc without the laser arm having to move up and down too much to seek the data, so you need to make a 1:1 copy from the disc so the data is arranged exactly the same. I'm sure that wears out the disc drive more than what brand of burnable cds you use.
I used to recommend/use Taiyo Yuden, but with the Taiyo Yuden buyout by CMC (Pretty poor quality manufacturer of blank media), there's been mixed reports of the new Taiyo Yuden media made by CMC. I decided to not waste any money and give Falcon Media Pro's a try which use TDK dye and are pretty well regarded as well. No coasters yet, laser reads sound pretty smooth and good pricing too. I'd say give their media a try if you can't get ahold of JVC made Taiyo Yuden. Verbatim AZO's are pretty well regarded too, but can't say anything personally as I haven't tried them out yet.
I've been using a stack of Maxells for like 10 years (I don't burn a lot of discs), and they work fine enough. Also if you want to use the DC's drive and load games up, you can try the Dream IDE, basically it goes between the drive and motherboard so you can use both (I think) https://gametrackssite.wordpress.com/
