So a couple of us over at the Randomised Gaming blog I help run have decided to get together to see if we can get Sony to finally remove the PS1 region lock on the PS3. In case your not aware all models of PS3 support PS1 game discs, but only early models support PS2. We've done a video and if you agree, can I ask you spread the word on social media, there some details in the video description on Youtube about it.. No Idea if it will work but there is no harm in trying and at the very least it would be nice to see more PS1 PSN releases. Would be great to be able to put a USA retail game like Legend of Mana in a European PS3 and just boot it up.
At this point you might as well just mod the system tbh. The only reason I could think of as to why they would do that is because of licensing and you're probably not going to get anything done if it has to do with that. Good luck though
PSone games downloaded from the Japanese PSN store are not region locked. Besides it's too late the PS3 is in it's final days and there are emulators out the ass you can play disc games on.
I don't even see the reason why there was a region lock for the PS1 playback on the PS3 anyway. I would be glad to see this happen, but unfortunately it's not going to.
PS1s are dirt cheap these days anyway just get a Japanese PS1 and run that shit through an upconverter.
I can't see this ever happening - simply because Sony would have to get every single company that ever published games for the PS1 to agree to it, since the original developer agreements were all region specific. On top of this there are lots of games based on licenses, and in those cases the developers would have only got the licences for the territories they were planning to distribute in and hence they would be unable to agree to any request from Sony for a contract variation to allow multi-territory use without risking being in breach of their licensing agreement.
Not to beat a dead horse, but I'm not sure that Sony has this on the forefront of their mind. It's one of those day late and a dollar short situations. I'm not sure if they would have given this any thought even when the PS3 was fully alive and well.
again there are so many options to play PS1 import games it's a meaningless cause to a problem that nobody really has. If I want to play some Japanese PS1 games I'll play them in an emulator or buy a Japanese PS1 and upscale.
Isn't it because of the fact that you have to have a Japanese PSN account registered to a machine in order to play them? Why didn't Nintendo bother to region lock by software up to the Gamecube era? I mean sure there were physical barriers, but they were easily fixed with a cutting tool at best. And the Gamecube required soldering kynar wire to a switch.
It would be awesome for them to do this but knowing $ony they could care less about it sadly :-( though at least i have a modded xbox original so i can hopefully run my copy of Racing Lagoon on it.
I understand why region locking existed in the NES era, maybe in the SNES and Genesis era it was also acceptable. Starting from the Playstation generation, a lot of gamers were already mature, there was no need for region locking in my opinion.
Will see how it goes, yeah you can mod the consoles or get an import PS1 but it would be far easier if Sony just removed the lock. The fact that PS3 games discs aren't locked makes it all the more strange and I suspect it just a legacy issue with the PS1 hardware. PSN versions aren't region locked either no matter which store you buy them from which also makes it all the more stranger. No harm in trying, oh and feel free to help make some noise on twitter by retweeting some of the tweets from the guy running it. Cheers for the support!
^ Or just get a modchip for your PS1. In fact, "anti-piracy" modchips exist that will let you play your original imports on your own console while still not working for backups. Essentially only making your console region-free.
