Hi ladies and gents. A friend of mine recently got this Coca-Cola branded Dreamcast and there's precious little info online regarding it, wrote a little blurb on it and contacted Coca-Cola themselves but wondered if any of you learned folk might know something/own one yourself: http://www.thedreamcastjunkyard.co.uk/2016/11/the-mysterious-coca-cola-dreamcast.html
does anyone else feel that it looks like the laziest attempt to make a limited console? i thought it was gonna be Coke game gear epic, talk about disappointment.......
I think this is probably the answer Tom. I have seen a few of these and nearly picked one up myself a while ago. It is very similar to the Milka console or the Lawson J League one that I own. Essentially promos but trying to find out for what purpose is very very tricky, as we have found with the Grand Prix II!!!!
I contacted the official Coca-Cola collectors website/forum and the guy who replied said they didn't know anything about it. Several people who are members of the Dreamcast Junkyard Facebook group have posted images of their own Coca-Cola DC so I don't think this was a one-off. There are clearly multiples of this model...but as to the origins it's still a mystery for now. Thanks for all your comments people
I don't know much about Dreamcast. I just wanted to point out that several Coca Cola branded 3DO (NTSC/J) consoles also exist. They are the typical FZ-10 models with a single silk screened Coca Cola logo on the case. It's a lot like your Dreamcast. I don't think your Dreamcast is home made or a one off. They must have been made for a promotion or contest of some kind.
http://blogs.yahoo.co.jp/rig_veda/48856804.html This guy doesn't know where it's from either, but he says he found mention of a promotion in July 2000 at Jonathan's, a restaurant chain, called "Drink Coca Cola and get a Dreamcast!"
No, I think the laziest one must have been the Toyota Dreamcast - that was just a sticker. A sticker that was supplied loose and not even attached to the console. It came with a custom version of Dream Passport which was identical to the regular one except that it had some built-in Toyota bookmarks.
I honestly have no idea what the backstory to it is - one of my friends had one and we were laughing about just how little effort seemed to have gone into it.
