http://i.imgur.com/UmtmwBf.png http://i.imgur.com/u4MVATt.png From a 25 year old electronic device, the LED is about 2mm by 2mm and almost 3mm tall with the dome. The leads are straight out of the side. I tried looking for similar low profile LED and I keep finding the larger 5mmx5mm of similar design with 4 pins straight down rather than 2 leads to the sides. It is not SMD as it is not actually soldered in but taped to a plastic flex circuit. Because it is not soldered in, regular SMD probably won't work in its place. I checked with a regular 3mm T1 LED, it does not quite fit as it is too tall and I don't have the means of cutting the top of the LED while maintaining the dome top. I tried electronics sites and I keep getting either T1 or SMD. I used to see this quite often before SMD LEDs became common. And searching for "low profile LED -smd" gets me oh about 10,000 results, all for household lighting which won't work off a 2v DC rail (actually about 5v plus in line resistor) and are way too big. Is there a specific term I need to use beside low profile? I hope the design didn't become extinct in favor of SMD.
Thanks, it is the right term but it does seems like obsolete design. They were before cheap blue and white LED was developed so they exists mostly in older red/orange/amber/yellow/green range. Looks like I'd need to ghetto a substitute with a suitable sized white SMD. Snip the old LED off while leaving the original leads intact and solder the SMD right on the leads.
Instead of Googling a vague term, choose a decent supplier and search on their website. http://uk.farnell.com/webapp/wcs/st...tegoryId=700000006139&langId=44&storeId=10151 That was hard!
Thanks for the link but I was hoping it came in white. Sanded down 3mm could work but there's a risk I'd hit the tiny wire between one of the lead and the LED die inside before I got it down small enough to fit. I'll look at my 3mm LEDs when I get home with a powerful magnifying glass to see how much I can cut off.

$20 to order the minimum 15 plus shipping? Ouch. I ended up with lot of 10 3528 SMD LED for $3 shipped. It's nearly exactly the same size as original. I am able to replace the old LED: Shown next to one of Lynx's action button for size reference. It's a 4 pin chip, the notched corner and 2 other pins on bottom are cathode (negative) while pin 4 is anode. Snipped the old orange LED out and soldered the SMD LED onto the leads, it was a nice fit and fits just nicely when I put the membrane back on the plastic frame. It comes up rather bright so I need to find the resistor and increase the value to tone down the brightness. Never knew the word POWER could be lit up as well! PS no I am not taking request to mod your Lynx, working with tiny piece is a pain in the butt, especially when the membrane is sensitive to heat and can melt.
