    Hey Guys,

I found a couple of PAL PS1 games I want to pick up, but I don't have a PAL TV or a PAL Playstation however I have a Net Yaroze and two Blue Debugger Stations.

Can I just put the PAL games in and play them like normal? I've been looking over the forums for a while and couldn't find a definite answer.

    Thanks

I believe the net yaroze will boot them, but you'll have issues w/ not having a PAL TV... generally distorted black and white picture, and no sound.

Ok lets say I have a regular playstation that hypothetically can play import games. Is there a mod that I can do where I can switch the output signal from the playstation?

    I didn't think PS1 could use RGB, I thought only PS2 and PS3?

Really? So can I just use the RGB cable that my PS2 uses and then play PAL games on my Net Yaroze or Blue Debuggers with no issues?

Thanks for all the help guys!

Yes. Some PS2 RGB cables have a switch for DVD playback (thanks to Sony fucking it up and making RGB very green... some component issue I guess, can't remember now) but it should be selectable on the cable, and if it's working for your PS2 games it'll work for PS1.

Chipped Playstations are happy with any region game, they just output whatever the game tells them to. Debug units should be the same as I recall, don't know about the Yaroze.

Yeah my RGB cable for my PS2 is not the official sony one but it does work very well and I was able to notice a difference between it and the RCA cables that came with it.

I'll have to try connecting it up tonight and see if I notice a difference.

    Thanks

Your problem will not come from bypassing region lock. Your problem will come from the fact Pal PS1 games will only output a 50hz pal video signal. If you don't have a proper 50hz tv then you're going to get ****ed.

Ps1 isn't like current gen systems where the game's rely on the OS to deal with this stuff.

So using RGB isn't going to solve my problem? I really has hoping to not depend on emulation . . .

Most LCD TV's will display 50Hz PAL, some even have dual NTSC and PAL TV tuners, often with a universal PSU (100-240V). It's only the CRT TV's that are usually a lot more fussy.

If your tv or input device can't handle a 50hz signal, your boned for now.

Whats the best way to find out if my TV supports Pal? I've got a Sony Bravia KDL-32L504 but haven't found out much about it online yet though I am still looking.

Most CRTs that aren't ancient, at least here in Europe, will handle both NTSC and PAL. I had a piece of crap one that was like 10 years old and could do both.

Yes, TVs from Europe which support both. Not the case in the USA.

Your HDTV/Digital TVs should support PAL just fine even in the US. Generally you will only have problems on consumer American CRT type TVs. They are not multi system and don't understand a PAL video signal and try to use it as though it's NTSC which produces the black and white with screen rolling type of behavior.

If you buy an RGB monitor and use a RGB cable you can play both PAL and NTSC games on any PS1 so long as it will boot the disc. I mean you could play it on a regular TV but the game determines if the system outputs PAL or NTSC.

I don't recall trying anytime recently but I am pretty sure I've played some PAL games on my Sony PVM RGB monitor and it didn't has any issues since it will autodetect PAL or NTSC and just works. PS2 works the same. Not sure about Sega Saturn. NES, SNES, Genesis are all locked to outputting their native region's signal and you'd have to mod the systems to change that.

One final note, you know it doesn't hurt to just try it. Just hook it up and see if it works or not. You shouldn't be able to damage anything.

Yeah I know I won't damage anything its more of the fact that I wanted to know if it would before I spent money on getting some games, having them shipped from Europe to the US and then finding out I can't play them.

Also I thought my TV had RGB, but its actually has component . . . didn't realize there was a difference till now. However my TV does have a VGA input, so I wonder if I can just go to Radio Shack and make a VGA cable from my playstation, or find cable that I can convert, etc . . .
