It's not that bad, really. Unless you got a SCPH-39000 series. @@
I heard that the SCPH-50000 series is really quiet.

Just how bad are your SCPH-10000 units? I have 2 SCPH-10000 units and 1 SCPH-15000, but none of them were even close to being as noisy as my SCPH-39006, while it is in turbo mode (as in, when the expansion-bay is active). @@
My SCPH-15000 is noisier than both of my SCPH-10000 units, but seems to be pushing more air (assumed to be at a higher RPM).

Or maybe it's not that your SCPH-10000 units are noisier than the ones that I have, but maybe my SCPH-39006 has a noisier fan.

EDIT: OH wait. Now there's a new champion here: my DTL-T10000H. It is far noisier than any PS2 ever made.

Could it have manufacturing problems ? I've certainly seen units that were way too old than the normal for their type. My own SCPH-10000 for example has the tray run faster than normal and the fan is a little louder than other SCPH-10000 units. But I know why that happens:

I ran the leaked SONY service tools which connect to the PS2 through RS-232C in it and the eeprom has been updated with different parameters. For example the tray being made to operate faster is a fix for the problem 10K units have with the tray occasionally getting stuck when the console is left a long time without a disc on the tray.

Well, I bought a new SCPH-39008 (estimated in 2003). And it was noisy already. Now the fan noise even more, but it should be (connected hard drive) One of my SCPH-10000 noise is not so much, the second SCPH-10000 much more (this is one in which I changed the CKR61, and I think she was already in her life repair Sony - fan revolves more fast and the tray faster)

The faster fan is a setting on the EEPROM. If you look at it, you might notice that the 10k with the louder fan will also be with the tray at least 10% faster than the other unit.

@sp193 ah okay, i was just double checking to make sure if someone fixed that issue yet, so i guess i'll just buy that Nextwork adapter with the 40GB HDD it comes with online.
